I started tomatoes, herbs and peppers in January and they are up and growing. The tomatoes just got up-potted and I may have overdone it (45 cherry tomato plants) but I'll interview prospective adoptive parents and give many away. The guest bedroom smells of damp earth--not a bad odor! Seed starting ( photo / image / picture from marlingardener's Garden ) These are two of the tomato cells before I separated them out for up-potting. Each cell had two tomatoes in it, the result of a good germination rate. Tomatoes ready to up-pot ( photo / image / picture from marlingardener's Garden ) I can hardly wait to get out in the garden and plant them!
Jane, They look great. An oscillating fan blowing on them will help to make nice sturdy stems as they grow, too. (I just brush my hand over the foliage as I look at them, One: to check for any aphids, two: to make them sturdy and three:...I just like the smell :-D it's spring).
Those seedlings look GREAT! I won't be able to start any seeds for at least a few weeks yet. Yours look very happy
Those tomato seedlings are doing great. They look better than the stuff from the nursery. I noticed down on the bottom of your shelf a box of Miracle Gro? Do you feed a bit to your seedlings? If so, how diluted?
Cheryl, I hate to admit it but the box of Miracle Gro actually has a plastic bag of sifted manure in it. I add a bit to the water when I bottom water the plants. There is still a bit of the MG stuck to the plastic bag, and I'm using those dandy little measuring spoons that come with it, so my seedlings may be getting some MG, but mostly cow poo. When I used MG up north (shortage of cows) I used it at 1/4 strength until I up-potted, and then at half strength until the plants went into the garden. How do I remember all this, you ask? I have my old garden journals--they have made two moves with me!
That's a lot of tomato plants Jane,..imagine what they would look like were you to keep them all,..those in your picture look very strong and healthy,..i hope your weather permits you to plant them outside soon,..i am sure you will have many offers to take quite a few plants off your hands.
