I think its a railroad spike ( photo / image / picture from Donna S's Garden ) Really cool fossil. I'm 60 miles from the ocean. How old can it be? ( photo / image / picture from Donna S's Garden )
Some Might Say Some might say that fossil is no older than 12,000 yrs. old. Some might say, 20 million yrs. old. I say it's in the millions. SOME MIGHT SAY, WE WILL FIND A BRIGHTER DAY. Noel Gallagher/ Some Might Say
Good finds! The fossil is what is called an "aggregate" because the fossilized shells are embedded in stone that used to be sand/silt on the ocean floor. I have no idea how old. We find ammonites, an early form of nautilus here in Central Texas, and we are even farther from the ocean than you. That does look like a railroad spike. Keep digging, and tell us what turns up!
Very interesting Donna,..looking at the fossils and seeing sea shells in there i was thinking perhaps the spike or large nail was linked with the fossil,.."a ships nail", so keep digging.
neat finds! especially the fossil. We've always been told that there is buried treasure on our property (we're not too far off the Old Spanish Trail). As kids we were always digging holes looking for it. My dad and his brother even went as far as getting a metal detector. And now every time I dig a hole for a plant and hit something hard, my heart skips a beat because I think I've found the treasure! But, it's usually an old tool or chunk of concrete. :'(
