I have Forsythia out front and there are these things on the bush. Can anyone here help. Picture is here. Ed What are these things? ( photo / image / picture from Edlou8181's Garden )
Is the whole bush like this or just a few? My guess is that it is a mutation of the flower buds. Maybe caused by the weather or perhaps exposure to an herbicide or it is just sometimes something that happens.
Phomopsis fungus or Forsythia gall, there is no know known cure. Caused from the fungus entering injuries on branches. Remove effected branches three inches into green growth away from the gall. If this is a healthy older bush it will most likely survive. Depending on how much of a young bush is effected the bush may be lost. Caution should be taken to prevent spreading the infection. Sterilize the cutters after each cut with alcohol or bleach. Carefully dispose of the effected branches. Jerry
Cool, Jerry. I did not know that. I haven't ever seen it. I have seen mutations in plants and was assuming that was what it was.
Re: Sorry to bother,BUT Now I can't help you with this question and I am glad Jerry Sullivan was able to give you the info that you needed BUT I don't know why you wouldn't want to bother us....... We love to hear from you. This is your home as well as ours. Everyone has equal questioning and bragging rights in this garden. I am sure everyone would agree with me. So please don't feel that you are bothering us. We all benefit by these questions. We can all learn together. That's what makes it fun here, Ed. :-D :-D
Yes Ed, if folks didn't ask questions, we'd all be more ignorant (and in my case that could be fatal ). Ask away, and we are eager and willing to help! We like to hear from you.
Thank You I just wanted to thank all my friends for the kind words and help on my sick bush. I will refer it to the Apt complex office since its their plants. The 2 Forsythia out front are covered with those fungus things and they're quite damaged from the kids trying to climb them. The weather is finally going to the 80's today, then back to the 60's over this coming weekend. Thanks again, ed
xox sent out to you Ed right over the Delaware River.... Remember to tell them that they should dispose of the infected branches carefully for it can be spread around. People that don't understand about plant diseases won't head the warning. but at least you can make the effort about it.
