Our gardens are really 24 hour places, for when the sun goes down and the shadows swallow the color, the flowers, bushes and trees belong to the creatures of the night. In the dead of night, foragers, aided by the cover of darkness weave their way through the plants and foliage in search of a meal. One such denizen of the night will have me rethinking my fall planting for next spring. It is too late for about 50 crocus that were planted last fall and have filled the belly of some creature(s). So a replanting of crocus this fall will have the corms surrounded by a shield of buried chicken wire. Hopefully the creature does not have wire cutters in it's tool bag. Jerry
Yes it is indeed frustrating not knowing what pest is having a wild party in our garden at night. In my case the came and dig out the mulch, luckily they left the plants alone.
A skunk or a raccoon. Since I have not seen a raccoon in a coon's age, the skunk is first on the list. I will smooth out the ground around a cache of surviving corms(protected by chicken wire) and later look at the footprints in the soft soil for confirmation. Jerry
Ups! Not nice at all. Good luck with the chicken wire and on identifying the culprit. You probably can't do much about it but at least you know where to put the blame.
