For the last few weeks I have been getting terrible pins and needles in my left hand, not the thorn hand. Then for the last week or so I have been waking in the night in agony, strong bone pains in my middle finger and thumb and around my wrist, as though the bones are burning. So, enough is enough and I went to the docs today. Several tests were carried out and I have been diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel syndrome. Marvelous!! They have given me a dose of anti depressants, only mild ones, but apparently these are given to people with nerve related problems as it should relax my nerves during the night so I don't get the awful pain. However, I don't want to be taking these for the rest of my life...so it looks like darn surgery! Can you believe it!! There I was saying no to having surgery on my finger as I can't afford the time off work, and now it looks like I might have to anyhow!!! AAAAGGGGHHHH! Fingers crossed I get a full nights sleep tonight with no pain.
I hope you get a good night's sleep!! It's amazing how rotten you feel when your sleep is disturbed I hope you don't have to have surgery!! The surgery on my broken wrist wasn't so bad but the recovery has been a pain in the patoot!! Deanna :-D
I hope it clears up .They told me I have Carpal Tunnel syndrome and the Dr.wants to do surgery on both my hands but I'm putting it off.I hope you have good luck on yours E.J. I hope you get a good nights sleep.
Oh EJ your not having much luck at the moment are you? :'( I wonder if the docs would operate on your other hand while you're in having the the CTS surgery. Might as well get it all over and done with at the same time as you won't be able to work for a while after the op anyway. I never give up do I? I just don't like the thought of that thorn still being in the joint. OK I'll shut up and just wish you all the best and hope that you'll soon have 100% use of your hands again. :-D
Just wait until you get old! I turned 65 on Wed. and had to go see the cardiologist for a 6 mo. checkup. Today was the eye surgeon and tomorrow in my family Doc. Age 65, more pain, more pills and less power!
How did your night go? EJ, such rotten news. I'm so sorry for you. Fingers crossed for your hand and the surgery and everything. *big hug*
Oh I am sorry EJ I had carpal tunnel syndrome diagnosed some years ago and it only flares on and off now I havent had surgery but like you it is bad when it flares I tried diuretics and anti depressants for it, nowdays I am on low dose amitryptilline for nerve pain ( not carpal tunnel) but I havent had a flare of it for quite some time so maybe it is working on that also. I am also on anti infammatories which might help it, I so hope it settles for you and you get a good nights sleep, broken sleep is awful and to wake in pain makes it worse, I have spent so many nights tossing and turning till I give in and get up because of pain I understand how bad it is, good luck and I hope it doesnt end with surgery.
Owie! I hope you get some relief soon. Are you wearing a hand brace at night? Just to let you know, it's not just age that causes that nasty little syndrome. I get it every time I'm pregnant (I'm currently pg with #4) and although it's a temporary nuisance, I feel your pain.
Gotta second the hand brace at night idea. When we are asleep we tend to ball our hands up. I had horribly painful problems, then started wearing a hand brace at nigh, one that encloses a good bit of the wrist and has a steel plate to immobilize the hand. Wore it every night for about 6 months, and the prob. was gone. Can't say this works for every one but just my suggestion.
The brace idea is a good one, EJ. Life is full of compost, isn't it? Take heart - I'm 67 and have survived a broken ankle, frozen shoulder and lens implants both eyes and I'm still going strong, with rest stops of course. Make sure you get exercises to do with that hand after surgery. I wish you the best, EJ.
Thanks for all the well wishes guys. The hand brace was suggested to me by the pharmacist, so we are going into town tomorrow and I will see what I can find. I tend to sleep with my hands under my head...Mark says I sleep like a cartoon character! Anyhow, had another disturbed night, but I guess the tablets will take a while to kick in. Such a drag! Eileen, I did think about suggesting they do both hands...and I still might.
Gad! I can't get over this. You are having no luck at all with those hands of yours. I'm sorry to hear about the impending surgery...but once that has healed you'll be ready for the gardening season, won't you. Hang in there, kid. ..and keep us up-to-date on developments there.
Oh my EJ We have to take life with a bit of salt they say. I hope for the best for you - hang in there.
Well, the drugs have worked their magic and I am having a better nights sleep, although it is a little unsettled and not really deep...don't know if that is the medicine or just my body being out of the habit of sleeping through.
