to drive me nuts. (yeah, I know, It ain't a drive, it's a putt) This weekend, I got 35/100ths rain. Just one and one half miles north got 74/100ths. The further north, the more rain. I've talked to some people complaining of standing water in their yards and gardens. South of here got rain too! I don't know anyone down that way (Cincinnati) to find out how much they got. But, I'm sure it was more than me! At least by the look of the radar. I still need to plant turnips and beets. I've already planted garlic and rutabaga's. I sure hope they don't get burnt out/up. Okay, enough ranting for now. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.
I know how you feel ... I was getting SO frustrated when it seemed to rain everywhere but here. I couldn't water anything because we were are on a well ... I got to toting containers of water from the lake just to keep my gardens alive. We did finally get some rain, I never thought it would happen! I'll do a rain dance for you FBG
I live 30 miles northeast of Columbus and got 1 1/2 inch of rain and a bunch of lightning and thunder!
We got two 1/4" rains yesterday, but it is so dry it hardly looks like it was anything. The back yard has 1" wide cracks in it . I have never seen 1" cracks in the back yard. There are underground springs back there, but evidently not this year. The pond has about 2" of water in from the rain yesterday (before that it was dry)....Whoopie! now the frogs can swim and the raccoons and deer can drink. We, too, need the rain desperately. The corn is only staying alive, I have not had any to pick to speak of. It doesn't have enough moisture to form an ear. :'(
We are not having a problem with a drought this year but the first five years we lived in NC it was a pretty dire situation. Even with all the rain, watering plants can be a pain if they are isolated or fair away. I am planning some rain barrel solutions. A rain barrel can be attached to a series of drip hoses. Also, you can put rain barrels in series, to collect a lot of water. I have seen 1000+ gallon tanks but I am opting for some 50 gallon ones, I heard someone has them for $15 each. I think it's a good way to store water for plants. This web page has some convincing numbers: http://thegoodhuman.com/2008/08/25/just ... your-roof/ I've seen some pretty creative solutions. But, for me mainly I like the drip hose convenience. DH was actually thinking of a remote control system of drip hoses and rain barrels but I walked away... he can drive me batty sometimes!
We did get some rain Friday. And looks like might get some today. But will take a lot to catch up. Lot of farmers are chopping corn for cattle feed.
We are fairing pretty good in this part of the state because of all the rain we had in the spring. Even though we're technically not in a drought this summer... we still have to deal with the usual heat & dryness. I got a couple little rain showers within the last week... probably added up to 1/8th of an inch. So the water hoses are back on full duty. I really must make the time to get another rain barrel set up.
We did get more rain. will help beans-but too late for corn. But when we do get rain-has to have high winds. Play pick up sticks.
