This Quercus virginiana (Live Oak) had been planted less than 4 months before Hurricane Rita did its thing, so afterwards I moved it to our new (old) house. With few places to plant a live oak, I chose this spot where it can grow over the driveway and carport. My wife said it would crack the concrete. Well that's exactly what I want it to do. I hope I live to see the day when it happens- I love it when trees show their power. The city already replaced the sidewalk next to my mature oak. My house is on piers so I'm not worried about that. When the city was digging out the concrete, they were warned, told, and ordered, to NOT damage these exposed roots. We have an oak lined boulevard (Enterprise Blvd.)that has a double row of live oaks planted and it's like a roller coaster. Love it.
I like crooked, uneven sidewalks. Folks using them can't just zip by--they have to look down, look around and actually see where they are and where they are going. Live oaks are a thing of beauty. Yours will be very happy there, breaking up cement, for years to come!
