Im wondering if Im allergic to Tiger Lilies, would I be allergic to all lilies? Its a bad allergy too. If Im within 30 or so feet of one in bloom, I instantly start sneezin, nose clogs up, eyes start watering and I have trouble breathing. I have a bunch of lilies coming to plant for fall. Just wondering what Im looking at come spring. Thanks Pinkie
Are you sure there isn't a weed out in the same area that is doing it? I have never noticed a smell to any of the tiger lilys that I have....It could be just about anything. I had to switch to liquid detergent in the washing machine because I would sneeze a lot from the powdered..
I'm going with Sherry on the allergy being caused by another plant in the area, a plant that depends on it's pollen being blown by the wind for pollination. Because the pollen in Lilies is heavy and waxy, they are pollinated by bees, hummingbirds and butterflies that carry the pollen from one plant to another. You would have to be sticking your nose in the lily to be affected by it's pollen or touching the pollen then rubbing your nose with that hand. If the Lilies are the highly fragrant type, then you could be allergic to that and the symptoms would be the same, that allergy is called vasomotor rhinitis.
I just know that the only plant in bloom during that time was my tiger lilies. I walk out my door and bam. SO I had my ex pull them out of the ground and take them to a neighbors house.Within 10mins or less I was just fine. I get the same reaction if I am around them in nurseries or outlets. I exist fast if I see them. I seriously dont think ti was something else that might have caused it becuase of how my body reacted once the lilies were out of my yard. WHo knows. But Im not brave enough to try it again tho.
Sounds like it could have been the fragrance allergy too, same symptoms and it occurs when you are around them in any location....stores, nurseries, florists, etc. At least now you can breathe and go outside without being miserable.
There is a double lily that is said to be allergy free because it doesn't have pollen. The Melodie Double Asiatic Lily from Michigan Bulb Co. It was pink so I took extra notice Hope it isn't true about your allergy though
