Ok, so I can't buy dirt for the raised beds I had planned. But, I discovered that only one section drains poorly, and I built it up. The rest of the planned garden section is still "yard". I have a friend with a tiller I can supposedly borrow. Next week. I have two ideas flying around in my head. 1. Just till up the whole area. Move "extra" soil into the actual beds and use cardboard covered with leaves for the walkways. And then plant. Probably transplant paper pots into holes I have to dig. 2. Don't till. Just poke a hole in the yard for the corn seeds and dig a hole for transplants. Once the plants are up, mulch with newspaper and leaves. That should keep the grass from interfering with the veggies What do you guys think? Do I really need to till? I'm running late for planting and I'm incredibly lazy.Thanks for your opinions!!
In my personal opinion, you will shoot your self in the foot if you try to plug plant corn in a grassy area. too much root competition for moisture. i would suggest at least one till this season to kill the grass as well. you may find it will choke out your young plants. and depending on whether or not you have a creeping or clumping type of grass, that wil lmake a huge difference. it will in essence kill the clumping grasses, but act as dividing so to speak for a creeping type of grass. If i were you, i'd till...sorry probably not what you wanted to hear... i am lazy too... but so lazy i would not want to spend time planting and have a crop fail or not do well... that's wasted effort!! good luck!!
I would most definitely till it this first time. And yes, bagged dirt is outrageous and doesn't go far.
