So, we have moved into a 115 year old house and lot that finally has a "dog free" zone. Finally my two 80lb dobermans have another spot to destroy while I can improve my gardening skills. The plot I have planned is about a 8x20 foot area with 2 additional 4x10 foot beds on the north and west edges of the yard. I have everything planned for what to plant (our last frost is early to mid april in Northern Wyoming). My soil ph test kit is ready, now I just have to decide whether to rototill or shovel turn my spots. These areas have been nothing but grass and weeds for at least the last 15 years, are compacted but not concrete. I could probably hand turn everything in a day. So should I rototill or is it worth it for the little worms to hand till, how deep should I till either way? I am going to be adding a bit of compost to start to give things a boost but the soil seems pretty healthy so far.
Wow...nothing done for 15 years! Well, I know it's alot of work, but because it's been so long, I would double dig it all...then apply the compost and any other soil suppliments that you intend to use. Finally then, rototil the additives in and let it be for a month (if you can). Before you are ready to plant, use a heavy rake and rake the very upper layer to a fine tilth, and plant.
I think I'd rototill. You may have to do it a few times but all the hard work will pay off Deanna :-D
