This is the male keeping an eye on us to make sure that we stayed away from the nest.

What a handsome bird. We don't have them here, at least I have never heard of them here.

Well done Eleen. Most are rather nervous at this time of year, you did really well.

A learn-something-new-every-day moment here. I've never even heard of this bird. How neat!!! He's very interesting looking with his top feathers.

The Lapwing is also known as a Green Plover. The plumage on his back is a beautiful shade of dark green - hence the name. It can look almost metallic when the sun shines on it - very attractive.
Their call sounds like the another name they have which is Peewit(or Peewee here in Scotland) and can carry for quite a significant distance when heard up on the moors. A parent bird will pretend to have a broken wing and flap around, supposedly in distress, to distract preditors away from their nest site or young while its mate will dive-bomb the hunter and attempt to chase it away.

My dad once said. "what is up when it is down and down when it is up" It is the top knot on the peewit. Our killdeer does the same to take people etc away from the nest.
