I tore up an old pillowcase into 2" wide strips and started tying up our tomato plants. I have only so many old pillowcases. What do you use to tie up tomatoes? I have enough strips to last a week or so, so a prompt reply with suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
(Zip ties and handcuffs are out of the question.)

There is a inexpensive nylon tube used in outdoor upholstery welting that I have tons of, but it was passed to me via my FIL's estate. It lasts about a year, plenty for a season, and its waterproof, clothy soft, and just a little stretchy.

We have soft tomato string especially made for this. I have the brown sort and the green sort. I say sort, but the only difference is the colours actually. We use it every year.

Mart, I used tee shirt strips also, but we are out of tee shirts deserving to be torn into strips. We are snappy dressers!
Sjoerd, the garden string available is too thin and too hard. It would damage the tomato stems. If I ever find any of your soft string for tomatoes, I'll get at least two balls of it!

210 feet long for the price and this is premium at your door. Hunt a bit and you may find it for less.

Jane, I know the type of rough twine that you are talking about. I wouldn’t let that stuff come within a kilometre of precious plants. For most other bondage tasks I use the green plastic twine. You are right though—don’t use the rough stuff.

I wish that there was a brand name label on that soft stuff. It is thin but soft.
I brought this twine home to tie-up the extra’s, but usually I use it in the garden. I have the green and the brown, so that I can choose according to my mood. ;)

I was forced into culling my underwear drawer this morning and realized that the elastic bands are quite useful. See, I have to destroy them usually by pulling the bands or DW will wash and return them even in a horrifically hole-y state. Her favorite yard clothes are essentially tatters imo. Still, in a pinch, you could find emergency bindings while improving the herd so to speak, because nobody culls that underwear drawer.

Well,, its about time for me to hit the thrift store for more yard T-shirts ! I have a few that have stains from most of the meals I have cooked in the last year and are equipped with built in air conditioning !

MG,, try a few garage/yard sales in your area ! You can usually find a box of items where odd stuff is tossed in ! I have found things in there for a quarter ! Those are great for cutting into ties ! And cheap !

Mart, garage sales had never occurred to me! You mentioned my favorite word--cheap! I'll give it a go.
