Some time back one of the members suggested a contest for the best, biggest tomato. Don`t remember who it was but does anyone want to ? No prize,, just bragging rights. Might be fun !

I did. I do. I was. My wintersown totes are all loaded.

I'm going to grow some beefsteaks. Time'll tell if the tomato fairy sprinkled some extra grow juice on 'em.

Do we all need to grow the same variety to make it a comparable contest? Or do we grow whatever we usually grow and enter it into the contest? One entry or multiple entries and is there a time frame in which we enter or all summer long since we all have different growing zones?

It should be a single fruit. Ideally with a photo of it on a scale.

If size is the criterion for bragging rights. Grow what you think will make your biggest fruit.

Hmmmm, I ate my last tomato seeds and right now I only have cherry tomatoes, I don't think I want to plant the cherry tomato seeds for a '[biggest tomato contest'. So, the next time I'm in the grocery store I'll look for a big tomato. I can plant them next to the rhubarb, there is lots of sun in that part of the yard. :) I once grew a pumpkin......2 1/2 inches in diameter. My largest potato crop was 6, about the size of the cherry tomatoes. Do deer like tomatoes?

Jerry, the deer LOVE the flowers on the tomatoes. I saw a beautiful plant down at the neighbors last year where the deer ate all of the blossoms(I remarked his tomatoes were starting to get some size to them, and he laughed and said "yesterday it was loaded with blossoms, I told the wife the deer would be by to take care of them") and about 1/2 of the plant. I imagine it might have had a belly ache after eating a tomato plant.

Well, I think we could grow any variety, since many of us think ours is the best LOL. Only thing is many of us have different growing seasons so would October 31 for the last day of the contest give everyone enough time ? Or if your growing season is different just suggest a date. Would be nice if we had a separate thread for the contest. Like the sticky threads. Don`t know if we could do that though. Each of us could post our entries as they are ready and if we don`t have a scale at home, I am sure we could borrow one from someone that is maybe on a diet and has one that you weigh food on. Just take a pic of it on the scale and post it with the variety. Maybe we could get some idea of how they grow if its one that we haven`t tried before. Could also post any particular problems with the variety. A pro`s and con`s on it. I think one entry per member but since we have time, we can take a pic of each possible and just hang on to it, if another gets bigger, use it instead, we don`t have a time limit as long as the one we want to use is in by Oct. 31. Any other ideas?

Oct 31st works well for me.

    Any color

    any variety

any heirloom or hybrid will work

sitting on the scale with the weight showing.

    Is this all?

Well for those of us that might not see so well ya` might type in the weight too. I am sure some of those scales have little numbers ! Other than that I think you`ve covered it. Now wait till other members chime in and see if it suits all that are interested.

One of my tomatoes has a flower. Do you think I can keep it growing until October?

Oh dear. Every calender has to run out at some time. Your tomato does not have to ripen only on Halloween, its gotta be ripe by then.

Or at least that how I'm reading this thread.

I think Dooley meant that if she could keep it growing till then she would sweep the rest of us out with the garden dust. LOL
And Yes,, any time between now and Oct. 31st. But I am sure we will all hang on to our pics of "possible winners" till late Oct. Never know,,may get a bigger one later so don`t get in a hurry.
