I tried a new type this year. It's called a German Johnson. The fruit is supposed to get to 1/2 lb. to 1 1/2 lb. It has been in the ground since May 1st. It has about 30 bloom on it, but isn't setting any tomatoes. The bloom dry up with no tomatos setting. I have an early girl right next to it that is doing fine. The plant itself is growing great. Any suggestions ? We have had kind of weird weather her the past several weeks. It will be warm (mid 80's) for a few days and then cool, (low 70's and high 60's). Thanks for any help.
Some of the heirloom tomatoes have blossoms that are not as open as hybrids, or even some open-pollinated varieties. Give the German a good shake (that may loosen up the pollen so it will fertilize the blooms) and if that fails, try taking a small paint brush and moving pollen from blossom to blossom. I can't think of any other reason that your blossoms are not setting tomatoes.
Do you have lots of bee activity? If not I guess it is time for the paint brush! I've also heard that too much heat or other environmental factors will cause blossom drop. When the weather improves the condition will. Not sure if this is true, never had it (knock on wood)
Shake those two plants together if close enough or do the paint brush. I am not familiar with that type tomato. High humidity will also affect pollination.
