Even though the temps were near 80F today and there's not a chance of freezing temps in the near future... I went ahead and gathered up the potted plants that will need protecting when/if winter arrives.
Earlier this year I found these wooden racks at the dumpster at work.

Shortly thereafter, I painted them with a red deck stain. Found some old shelving. And now it'll be home to a few plants that will need protecting over the winter.

All I have to do is cover the whole thing when there's a threat of freezing temps.
A have another shelf with more plants that can be easily covered also. Plus the most tender plants have been indoors for a couple of weeks now.
There's a few more plants that will need to be "tucked in", but I couldn't bring myself to move them just yet.
Seemed really strange to be winterizing while it was so warm. But since it's nearly dark when I get home from work... I figured I'd better get it done now instead of scrambling around looking for a bunch of potted plants in the freezing darkness.

Lucky Plants!! They have the Cadillac of plant racks, freshly painted and standing by waiting to protect their charges from the cold. With all this preparation the cold just may avoid Texas this year.

Those racks are the ideal thing for overwintering your plants. I love the colour you've painted them - so bright and cheery.

Thanks everyone. They sure will be handy. Maybe TOO handy... they just may become permanent fixtures instead of just winter racks!
Oh no... that means even more plants. Poor budget. :)

Ummmmm, winter? Yeah, I guess it could happen again this year.

Look at plant buying like this. If you were a smoker you would be spending upwards of $50 every 10-14 days (that's $100 to $150 for a full month) on a carton of cigs, another $5 on lighters every month, $10 a month on breath mints to hide the evidence, about $50 a month to replace the clothes that have holes burned in them. That's between $165 and $215 a month that you could spend on plants.
If you are a smoker then look at all the plants you could buy if you stopped ;)
