going up to my "summer place", aka 5th wheel in an RV park, this weekend to get some work done before summer. Thinking about putting two of my tomato seedlings in a wine barrel. The average overnite lows are in the mid 40's and the average highs are in the 70's/80's - is it safe? what about a couple of peppers? Summertime highs up there are usually mid 90's - any suggestions on a good variety of chile peppers?

I usually wait until the lows are in the 50's and highs in the 70's. Looks like it will be next week for me by the looks of the long-range forecast.

Lows in the 50's is good advice, unless you plan on covering every night and uncovering every morning. If the soil temperature is still cold/cool they wont take off very well, you'll notice very little growth until the soil is warm. We planted already, but we lay black plastic mulch and let it warm up the soil for a few days and then put "wall o' waters" around them to insulate them after we plant. Quite a bit of work, but the crop is in early and we don't have to babysit it.
