The weather wasn't really good and we needed to get a birthday gift for my b-i-l, so we went to the neighbouring villages of Volendam and Edam.

We spent a day wandering around and shopping as well as looking at some of the sights that made the villages famous (here).

My bride told me that I looked just like a real tourist with my loose shirt, sunglasses and shorts. I didn't know quite what to say about that. hahahaha

Anyway after doing the shopping that we went there to do, I fell victim to a whim.
I saw a very inexpensive Delft Blauw vase....for Lathyrus.
It wasn't anything special at all, but I ah cutting many Lathyrus flowers every other day now...and it struke me that this small vase was just the thing for them.

Here is the vase...I think that it cost all of eight euros. There were literally hundreds of them in the Volendam tourist shops.
    What do you think?

...and a shot from a distance so that you can tell how nig it is. I am assuming that you all have an idea of how long the stems of Lathyrus is.

Now, isn't that a nice vase?
It may not be practical, as it doesn't hold much water and it is an odd shape (not round, but oval)...but I like it. I like it in spite of the fact that it is pure kitch. :)
I also liked the feeling of being a tourist for a day. It wasn't bad at all.

The vase is beautiful and an oval shape is good. You can get it closer to the wall if needed and it's always good to be different.

Playing tourist in your own area is fun. I think there are things around here that have become common place to us but that would be interesting to a tourist, guess I ought to try that someday.

Well, as you know, blue and white are two of my favourite colours so I love your vase. It sets off the Lathyrus to a T. I may even be tempted to buy one for myself the next time I'm over in Holland. :-D

I like the vase but my sister would love it even more. Her MIL came from the Netherlands when she was three years old. She started my sister collecting things with windmills. dooley

I like your vase. :D It looks lovely with those lathyrus in it, even though it's obviously made for tourists.

Very nice purchase sjoerd...I like the color of it and the flowers do look really pretty in it so I think your purchase was a good one....

I thought we would get a picture of the mysterious tourist for a day....it is always nice to be one..I feel like a kid in a candy store when I go to a nursery for flowers in the spring....I want it all...

I think "falling victim to a whim" is the perfect thing to do when playing tourist in your own area. AND, the vase is adorable.
