I also need onion advise. I had some fairly young red onions that my dog trampled today. They were broken at the base. Should I go ahead and dig them up? Or will they come back?

They will continue to grow as long as the roots are in the soil. Don`t worry much about onions, they will be fine. If you have some compost you can put it around the broken place to keep it out of sand or dirt and keep the tops going. I cook with the onion tops so I do this occassionally. I have seen fields of commercially raised onions with only the roots in the ground. Looked like a bunch of baseballs laying in the field. The tops of many of those were laying down likely from high wind.

Mother Nature gives onions an unlimited supply of onion tops! As Mart said, just leave them be, maybe a bit of compost, and your onions will be fine. The only thing that will kill an onion is losing its roots.
