Saw them in the driveway this morning. That's the first time I have seen them since Ike came through. I was afraid that they may have gotten taken out by the winds. We drove to Dublin Ohio this morning to go to Sam' Club and I was kind of surprised to see the amounts of damage to the corn fields. Some of them the stalks were completely down and in others just the tops were gone. The farmers around here had it rough this year. A really wet April May and June, then a really dry July Au. and Sept. And now the wind damage.
My father has had a tough farming year also Capt, lots of wet weather. Let's hope next year will be an improvement.
I actually don't know how much he has in total but he grows wheat and potatoes which of course can be badly affected by constant rain. He just managed to save the wheat and will try to get all the potatoes out of the ground soon.
I grew up on a 160 acre farm. Dad worked in a factory and farmed part time. Which meant that me and my 2 brothers ended up doing most of the farming. It didn't take many mornings of getting up at 5 am to milk 25 head of cows to realize I didn't want to be a farmer! So at 18 I went into the Navy. But there were some good times on the farm too. Always good food and plenty of it! We planted wheat, soy beans and corn and always had a field or two of hay also. We also raised and milked between 25 and 50 Holsteins for milk and usually had several hogs for meat along with some beef!
I'm glad your turkeys are back and I was really sorry to hear about the crops.I'm sure our cotton fields were hurt beyond saving around here.
