A friend was visiting recently, and asked where I got a certain lamp that she admired. I told her it came with TV stamps about 30 years ago. She asked, "What are TV stamps?" Oh, this younger generation, what they have missed! I explained about getting stamps at the grocery and some other stores with your purchases, putting the stamps in booklets, and then redeeming the booklets for a variety of things in the catalog. I still have sheets, lamps, and cooking pans that I couldn't have afforded at the time, but got through savings stamps. Yes, I know that I was paying for the items under the radar, and that the stamps weren't free, but still, it was fun and made me feel frugal, even it is was smoke and mirrors (did I mention I got a nicely framed mirror that still hangs in the guest bedroom?). Did you save TV or Green stamps, or any other kind and receive neat little extras?
Wow, does that bring back memories, I still have two items purchased with Top Value stamps(knife with scabbard) and S&H green stamps (Singer sewing machine) I will have to dig them out for pix. The knife was purchased 1955 or 1956 and the sewing machine was purchased 1967. Jerry
I do remember saving them and getting something with them but can't remember what. DH was in the military so I did most of our shopping on the base. I remember my Mom and Grandparents getting some nice things.
Probably not the same thing, but I remember when I was first out on my own and collected stamps at the local grocery store. You got a stamp for every $10 you spent, and you stuck them into a booklet. When the booklet was full you traded it in for dishes and could collect sets as well as cutlery to match. I still use those dishes 30 years later LOL
Oh yes I remember them well. Did Christmas shopping with them. I still have a step stool and a lace tablecloth purchased with green stamps. I also still have glass mugs that we got when we filled the car with gas. And I have metal serving trays that came with spic & span.
We had Gold Bond Stamps and S & H Green Stamps. Gold Bond was not as prevalent as S & H Green Stamps...seems like there was a redemption store in every other town back in the 50's to early 60's. My first set of dishes were purple Melmac from them...similar to this set ... https://www.etsy.com/listing/211437689/ ... ref=market. Mom used her stamps to get me the set before I got married in June 1964. And yes I wanted purple
We had Green Shield stamps that sound just the same kind of thing. My parents used to save them to help out with birthdays and Christmas. I bought baby items for my eldest son with them and was sad to when they were discontinued.
Oh my,I remember the endless hours of licking the darn Green Shield stamps after Mum had done the weekly grocery shop! I don't recall what she got from them though...
Back in the 1950;s I remember my Mom having boxes of S % H Green Stamps Books all filled. Never knew her to get anything with them though. There used to be a brand of laundry soap that you got free dishes in each box.
I still have about 25 books full. Think I could still use them.????? Speaking of never throwing anything away....
