Randy is extremely difficult to shop for so our oldest daughter really comes up with some unusual gifts for him. We went to her house for a combination birthday dinner for him and our youngest grandson whose birthday is the 24th. On Sept 12th we drive out to Abilene, Texas to Abilene State Park and check into our Yurt for two nights. It comes with a set of bunk beds, a fold out couch, interior light, refrigerator, night stand, microwave, picnic table out front not far from the water spigot and only 100 yards from the restrooms with showers. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/state-parks ... ties/yurts We will have to take a couple of lawn chairs and bed linens and bath towels. That Saturday we can drive into Abilene to check out some antique/junque shops and a museum or two then sit around outside the Yurt to enjoy the evening sights and sounds. Then Sunday check out and spend the afternoon wandering through more shops, then head home that night....or spend another night along the way to make the trip home a day trip and not a night one. I am really looking forward to it, fridge and microwave are my idea of roughing it and the bathroom isn't too far away.
It sounds like a wonderful time Toni...I am sure that the both of you will have a great time and we will all keep our fingers crossed for good weather... even if it does rain a little, you can just sit back and enjoy one anothers company. :-D
Sounds like fun Toni! I got to check out a Yurt this spring at Canada Blooms ... one of the featured gardens had one. It was really nice!
For that area keep your fingers crossed that it does rain. They have closed and emptied the swimming pools, all river and lake activity areas are closed because Lake Abilene is only 5% above being empty. We will probably take a few gallons of water with us to save theirs. But Yeah, we are really looking forward to the trip.
I thought you were headed for Tibet or Manchuria. Definitely 'different'. I was looking at 'cave' hotels on the weather channel yesterday. Supposedly, you get a feel for prehistoric living? Except they have amenities, some more than others. Now if they had you sleeping in a pile of flea ridden furs, and no loo, it would be more realistic.
Very interesting to hear what a yurt is. I hope you get time to snap a photo of said yurt during your break Toni! Have a great time in advance.
A vacation on the 'steppes of Mongolia, Texas' without the bleating of goats and the smell of musk ox. Enjoy your mini-vacation. Jerry P.S. Kefir anyone?
I really like Kefir, we get it once in a while at Whole Foods. Well, today we start packing. To save space we are going to vacuum pack clothing, we always have a 'go kit' with us containing vitals in case we are out on one of our junquing days and decide to spend the night somewhere. We have a cable and lock in the back of the pickup to safely secure any larger junque items. A long list of antique/junque shops in Abilene, lantern, flashlights, fold up chairs for sitting outside enjoying the stars. We will grocery shop when we get there but neither of us plans on doing any cooking so we will just need milk and snacks for late night. Camera and extra batteries. The weather forecast is gorgeous!!!! Lows in the 55-65 degree range, great sleeping temperatures and highs only in the 70's...not too bad for wandering around town. Looks to be a chance of rain between here and there and maybe there tomorrow.
Toni, have a great time, enjoy watching the stars, and no matter how hard Randy begs, do not buy a yak!
But Yak hair spins up nicely into yarn and would make a really warm sweater. Wonder if I can find any hair laying around the camp ground. What has been surprising to me is how few people know what a Yurt is when we tell them about this trip. The Oncologist yesterday just shook his head and questioned why we would go.
I hope you have a lot of fun and find some unique Antiques/Junque. Bit of trivia: DH was born in Abilene and had family near there until recently. We met in Merkel and were married in Abilene.
