We had to get a new washer and dryer late last summer. So we got the high effeicincy models. Withe the old washer we used about 6 bags of salt per month. We watched a show on tv last night that said the regular style washers use between 40 and 60 gallons of water per load. No wonder, with the new washer we are only using 2 1/2 bags of salt a month now!

    Water softener salt Capt?
Toni, its for "softening" hard water. Hard water can mess up clothes, leave em yucky even after washing. Thats the most scientific explanation I can give *lol* Me, Ive never used salt, I doubt we even -have- a softening system.

I wondered if that was the reason. I have never lived any place with hard water but I have tried to take showers while traveling and found it almost impossible to get a bubble out of the soap at motels with hard water.

i've had my front load washer for about 10 years. i absolutely love the fact that it uses much less water, plus spins your wash much better than the conventional top loaders...thus saving money on the gas used for the dryer! also about 6 years ago, i installed a tankless water heater, which also saves me big $$$ on my gas bill! :stew1:

Salt,..wow that is something i learned today,..never heard of it being used in washing machines before,..is it not hard on machines?.

Toni mentioned about not being able to get a bubble when in shower on her travels,..very interesting,..i thought it was just me and poor soap bars.

Yep, water softener salt! We have to have one here. A combination of hard water and high iron content. Which equals rusty looking clothes. When I was a kid, my Mom used to heat water in a big tea kettle to do the dishes with. This was before water softeners. She would have to replace the tea kettle about every 6 months. She used to keep a couple of the big shooter marbles in it to keep the rust broken up in it.
