Last Halloween we had pumpkins and I'd thought that we'd cleaned up all the seeds but ummmm I guess we didn't because this is what is growing right off of my front porch! I have a pumpkin patch It has already been blooming like crazy with many more blooms waiting to open. Which is alright by me, so im looking forward to having lots of pumpkins for pie, decorations and more seeds for next year lol (but in a different place) ( photo / image / picture from Gardening Grandma's Garden )
That happened to me too but mine's not as good looking as yours is :-D I threw the old pumpkin in the compost pile I have pumpkins everywhere in everything!! They are coming out of my petunias, out of every planter and some even went home with my folks when I gave them a rose bush
Um...I don't think that's a pumpkin. I believe it is a Wild Cucumber vine. (Echinocystis lobata) Do you have a closer shot of the blooms?
flowers of this plant i took some different photos this morning and a couple of the flowers had opened. since for the past 3 days its been cloudy and rainy, they hadnt flowered much. i laid my hand on one of the leaves to show the size of it, and there are leaves much bigger then this one too. OK...it looked like the blooms were tall and white in the first photo. I guess it could be a pumpkin...
Okie-doke, I'm going to give assent to it being pumpkin, too. It's been years since I grew them, but I do recall them holding their flowers up above the leaves that way, too. You'll know pretty soon. Exciting! Be prepared for that vine to take over your garden. They really scramble over some space. If you want to try eating the flowers, you can fry them up tempura style, as we were talking about in a thread in which the poster Bam talks about eating daylilies. Pumpkins give an excess of flowers anyway, I find. Oh as a curiosity---you've probably heard of people using milk to help grow very large pumpkins. Well I have a gardening friend from Afghanistan. We can communicate about gardening better than just about anything, despite our language barrier. I was kind of tickled to find that she, too, believed milk is a good "fertilizer" for pumpkin. Only, she used to have a cow to milk and provide the fertilzer! Me, I don't have room for a chicken, much less a cow!
Unplanned Pumpkin Patch My sister also had some pumpkin seeds sprout from some Halloween pumpkins. There seem to be at least two kinds, 5 plants in all that I've inherited. Yes, they are taking over a huge space, but think about all of the great pumpkin bread, pies, soup and...mmmmmm curried pumpkin seeds! Enjoy your gardener's windfall!!!
I can't wait! lol Its terrible because Im so excited about them and cant wait till i see those lil things start popping out all over the place hahaha. I don't get excited about much but when it comes to surprise plants lol Im up there hahaha. Have a Great Day!
Can't wait for mine to set pumpkins too! Got to get my initials carved into them to watch them grow. Will have a meal of those fried blossoms while I wait.
GardeningGrandma you couldn't have planted it better if you'd planted it yourself. It looks great. Good luck with the pumpkins. They are one of my favourite plants to grow. I've got 8 varieties in my garden this year. Some are doing better than others with the cool summer we've had, but that's gardening!
