I just got a new catalog that featured this planter for tomatoes. I've seen the ones before that just grow the tomatoes on the underside of the planter, but this one also has a planter above which I think is a great idea. I'm planning to build some planters for my deck railings this year, and may modify this design to make something a little nicer looking. It's always a good idea to have plants cascading down from a planter...why not a tomato? http://www.plowhearth.com/product.asp?pcode=6532
Kasey, Capt Kirk made his own upside down tomato growing system last spring. You might want to pick his brain about his experience before placing the order. http://www.gardenstew.com/about3957.html http://www.gardenstew.com/about6355.html http://www.gardenstew.com/about7097.html
Thanks for the links Toni. I have seen several homemade versions of these and they work great for growing them, but I'd still like to create something that looks a little nicer for on my deck railings...maybe made from wood. The one offered by Plow and Hearth in the link above still looks pretty industrial...I just like the concept of growing both inside the top planter and also below. Seems like a great idea if space is limited.
