The Mexican Flu is in remission, but the Olympic Fever has broken out over here. It's all people are talking about at the moment. I find myself getting swept-up in it to a degree. I have a couple of orange things I shall wear whilst watching some of the events. A silly hat, an orange sweat shirt and a orange neck scarf. I am prepared on the snack front as well--there's lots of salty chips and cola as well as some fruit juices. I'm ready. Let the games begin. The dutch supporters will be easy to spot--they'll be wearing orange. Fingers that they will behave themselves while they are guesting in Canada. Usually we do, but there are always a couple of silly people that do bad things that embarrass us. Fingers crossed. I personally am wildly interested in speed skating and will be following that closely. Curling is also interesting to me. I doubt that I will watch much of the rest, but I am very excited to see what will happen with the skating. I think that while annual European and World Championships are held every year and we always want to win...the Olympics have a certain "something", you know? Somehow winning a bronze, silver or gold medal at the Olympics means a bit more to us as spectators and to the athletes themselves. What a thrill that must have been for the torch to pass through your town, Whistler..and what a unique memento. Your man may have the contents, but you've got the can! Well, fellow gardners, I hope that if you watch the Olympics that you enjoy them alot and good luck to you all. Are you planning to watch?
I am! I'm an Olympics junkie. I watch a bit of it every day and then feel withdrawal when it's all over.... I like the downhill skiing and snowboarding the best, as well as the speed skating. I'm pretty excited. Whistler, if you're near enough, I hope you'll tell us some tales about what's going on there. Good luck to all the athletes and I'll be watching for the orange, Sjoerd!
I'll be watching too. I like to watch almost all the events but my favorite has got to be the Woman's Hockey GO CANADA!!!
Olympics? What Olympics? Winter Olympics maybe? I'm half-way into hibernation and have managed to filter any Olympic news away I'm afraid. Since I've no hope of medals by the look of the athletes I don't think I'll wear out the TV by watching, but I can appreciate the fever everybody else's having. Go, people, GO!
I'll be watching as well. I always watch the opening ceremonies. It is great to see all the athlelets marching in and the flags of all the countries. I enjoy the bobsled, luge, down hill, and speed skating. I haven't heard about the torch passing this year. So don't even know where it has been. Yes, let the games begin!
Congratulations CANADA!!! Oh, Bilodeau! What an exciting competition that was on the Mens' Moguls! So happy for you!
Another Olympics junkie here. Being able to indulge my Olympics addiction will be one of the best things about being retired. I know I am not an athlete but I sure do appreciate watching some of the best in the world. Congrats to the organizing committee for a great opening ceremony.
So sad about the young man that was killed in a luge' practice on Friday. There to pursue a dream in hopes of bringing home a medal. RIP
I always look forward to the olympics winter & summer. I love to watch all the skating...hockey, speed, short track, & figure. I also like the skiing. But I watch all the sports I find time for. I like hearing their biographies and seeing them receive their medals. In my youth I participated in many sports & can appreciate their efforts & dedication. Sjoerd...I even watch the curling. The first time I saw curling, I didn't understand it but after watching for a while and learning the rules I really enjoy it.
It was so nice to hear O Canada just now watching Bilodeau receive his Gold! I think the Canadian national anthem is one of the prettiest. I watch whatever is on!
You have a wide interest, Gail. Well for those that have time there is no shortage of variety of sports to watch. There is surely something for everyone. I was surprised to learn that you liked curling. I don't think I know another person (here) that does. I like figure skating, but because it is judged by people...I do not watch. I have noticed that at times other things play a role other than what the skater is doing or how he does it. There has even been blatent occurrences of corruption where a judge or two have been exposed. Having said that, it is nice to see the figure skaters do their sport. It is lovely, even an art form one might say. Daisy, I really enjoy the awarding ceremony for the top three participants. It is a part that sometimes gets forgotten in some contests during the course of a year. I feel that it is just as important as the contest itself...perhaps not as exciting, but just as important--certainaly to the athlete. Speaking of winter, I see that I have horizontal snow at the moment-- blowing out of the south. :? It's not going to end, is it.
I do agree about the figure skating judging. But it has improved over the last few year. It is unfortunate for these highly trained athletes that there is human bias but they have made changes in the scoring to help ensure the best performance gets the gold medal.
We watched a few of the events last night, I like the down hill skiing, speed skating and several of the others. The ice skating and dancing just isn't like it used to be. The scoring method has changed drastically since the scandal in the 2002 Olympics, but it doesn't mean there is no chance of a repeat of that happening. Sadly it just means that the public can't see any discrepancy in the judges votes. I miss the likes of Dorothy Hamill, Peggy Flemming, Scotty Hamilton, Brian Boitano, Curt Browning. Oh, and Torvill and Dean in their performance to Ravel's Bolero Speaking of Curt Browning...put him on ice, Gene Kelly doing the singing and you have a wonderful version of Singing in the Rain. This wasn't at the Olympics.... http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x67e76 ... shortfilms
Another winter olympics junkie here. I don't really watch the summer olympics, but the snow, oh the snow. I LOVE the skiing, downhill, cross country, and the moguls, then the skating and curling, then bobsleigh, skelaton, luge, but for me, it is the skiing. I had the best skiing in my life in Canada and I adore watching the men and women tearing down the slopes, and I enjoy the scenery and spectacle also. I try to get a fix every day, altho I am alone in this house with my longing so I do get the odd grumpy remark, but who cares.
