Back in the mid 90s a friend gave me what she thought was a periwinkle vine that gets blue flowers. I had not seen one in a long time, and did not notice any difference. I never had any flowers on the vine until this summer, and they were small and white. Now, it has these orange berries with white caps on them. I have no idea of what it might be. I was intending to pull it out this winter, or at least diminish it a lot by pulling much of it out. strange vine ( photo / image / picture from AAnightowl's Garden )
It is a Bittersweet Vine. Celastrus scandens (American Bittersweet) This page needs a photo of the berries I probably should add that this vine is a very quick grower, and is spread around by birds. I had a Honeysuckle Vine when I first started gardening that was taken over by this Bittersweet vine. I had no idea it wasn't what I planted until it was HUGE and had killed the original plant. It is nice, and the berries are great for decorating, but don't allow it to get too aggressive.
Thank you Netty! I will be thinning this thing out this winter. I have had it since the mid 90s, and it was supposed to be the periwinkle vine that gets those lovely blue/purple flowers. A friend gave it to me. Do you think my photo will do for that page you mentioned ?
