This was the first picture of a wren eating out of my hand. Yeterday it came 2 or 3 times but I was only putting food out, no camera. Today while taking pics of the kinglet, the wren pushed his way through, so here he is.
I agree Raddang. Our wrens are so easily frightened that I doubt I could ever get one to eat from my hand.
It's amazing that wild birds will eat from your hand! I cannot imagine the patience you must have, as well as the rapport you've established with them. Thank you for sharing your photos!
This is the sixth bird I have hand fed. The others are the nuthatch, chickadee, fox sparrow and the hermit thrush. I'm sure I could feed the Pileated, but I'm not that brave, I do get within two feet of them. I also think the downy might be OK.
Just put the food on the tines of a fork and see if the woodpeckers will take it. That would save your hands from getting pecked.
You set the bar very high Kildale where birds are concerned. I have successfully fed robins by hand with live meal worms but the only other success was many years ago with a collared dove. This bird 'adopted me'. In this picture it would sit on the chimney of the house opposite and fly down to my outstretched hand.
Cool photo Raddang and more than interesting that a wild bird, dove, adopted you. I've never had any wild birds come close unless they were Sea Gulls and I was throwing bread into the air!
Robins can always be relied upon to come close and take food from the hand. This little chap would take meal worms from my hand and also come close and sit on a camera. Notoriously territorial, I wanted to see his reaction to a mirror reflection. He took no notice.
Those are superb foto's Rad. I see in your new avatar that you donned the uniform to pull a bird. Well done. What uniform is that, BTW?
Cheers Sjoerd I changed my Avatar to show you what I get in my Christmas Stocking It is not me but the uniform is that of the Chelsea Pensioners. These are retired old soldiers who live out their retirement years very comfortably at Chelsea Royal Hospital.
Lovely photos. Am quite surprised you say your robins are that friendly as the robins in my neck of the woods are rather flighty. They're a common bird and you can see them often but I've never had one stop and come close or even hang about if I was in the area. Terrific photos though
@Kildale @LIcenter I am very intrigued by the number and variety of birds that you folks see in your gardens. Some are common to us in Europe but many are strangers and many are so colourful. I really enjoy seeing all your pictures, please keep them coming.
