I had recently posted on Gardening Other forum about harvesting rainwater. Here is a photo of our latest addition--two 250 gal. tanks that collect rainwater off the barn roof.

The large white squares at each end of the barn are the containers. There is a spigot at the bottom (which we are trying to figure out how to attach a garden hose since the opening is about 3" across) and I can easily fit a bucket under the outlet. My husband made a wooden cradle for the containers to sit on, and leveled the ground underneath so they wouldn't shift. He understands how important our gardens are to me, bless his heart! One container is full from the 1" of rain we had a week ago, and the other we just got hooked up to the guttering, but rain is expected later this week--whoopee!

    Well done you!!!
That is a super system. There is a bloke on our terrein that has one of those large containers like you folks have. They are very handy to have.
I am not jelous of the water containers....but I AM jelous of the bee hives. I would so much like to have some, but have not yet discovered a way to do that.

Anyway, MG--great posting. Congrats on your supurb system.

Oooooh, that's what I want. I have a place all set aside for at least one. I don't have a barn but do have lots of roof without guttering....yet.

Very nice, MG. :D Isn't it amazing how much water one large roof can supply you with?

This apparatus really is a cool thing to have!

However I recommend that you wrap both tanks in a large Space Blanket (or just ordinary aluminium foil) - Otherwise I am afraid that sunlight will cause algae to grow in it...

Well maybe not in your area, but in my climate - It will happen for sure.

S-H, we plan to paint the tanks to prevent both algae growth and also to protect the polypropylene from sunlight degradation. I wanted a tasteful sky blue with alternating green and yellow stripes, but my husband said we'd go with the cheapest paint we could find! So much for my artistic endeavors . . . .

That looks wonderful! I talked to my brothers over the weekend about setting up some tanks... they are all for the idea.

That's wonderful to hear! I mean, this is such a nice thing to have - But to see it ruined by algae would have been a real waste. So I for one am very happy that are going to take care of the sunlight issue! :)
