We were being smoked alive by our neighbour with smoke from burning tropical vegetations. We thought that it was really bad last Sunday but today is even worse. This situation had been going on year in year out and I wonder why there is nothing done about it when there are lots of hype about saving the enviroment. I guess money is more important than a clean enviroment.

Just watched a report on the TV News. Selfish behaviour is not in it, both for the environment and for their neighbours in Singapore.

If it is monsoon season does the rain reduce the smoke so the API is safer?

KK---Yikes those must be quite the fires. Why do they do so much burning and what are they burning? I did read the article but it really didn't say.

I am sorry you have to put up with that nasty smog as it is called in the US. I would have a horrible time trying to breathe that crud.

Hopefully, the monsoons come soon and douse all of those fires.

Why are they doing so much burning ?

Palustris, it is really bad in Singapore with the level of pollutant way above the dangerous or I should say super unhealthy level.

Jerry, from past experience even if there is a thunderstorm the relief was very short lived because fresh supply of the pollutant will be delivered very promptly. The only way is to stop all those burning at its source.

Chocolate, we will if we can.

Cherylad, the smell is really awful and lots of people with respiratory problem suffer the most, some evn choked to death.

Tooty2shoes, AAnightowl those fires are not natural, they were started to clear the rain forest for plantation purpose and also to clear the plantations of old no longer productive trees like oil palm. They have meetings, lots of meetings and affected neighbouring countries offered assistance to put the fires out but it is always refused. I'm sure you can imagine why.

Yesterday I took photos of the sum at about 4pm and the amount of pollutant in the air made the sun orangie-red in colour.

KK that look awful. How sad to think of rain forests being cleared.
To bad they can't pass a law against all that burning.
They could cut the trees down on the plantations and mulch them in stead of burn them. Or isn't that possible?
Smoke can really damage your lungs. Stay indoors and stay safe. :stew1:

Cherylad, normally it last about 2 to 3 months. A report in the Financial Times reported that "Mr Lee, flanked by his defence minister and environment minister, said it was impossible to tell how long the haze would last, but that it could continue for several weeks, “and quite possibly longer until the dry season ends in Sumatra”. That is typically in September"

Tooty2shoes, yes that is really awfuland if they want to they can pass a law against all that burning. Indonesia on Thursday accused Singapore of “behaving like a child” by complaining about severe haze from raging forest fires on Sumatra island that has cloaked the city-state. Yes they can cut down and mulch the trees if they want too but the cost would be much higher. The smoke is getting worse and we are staying indoors wearing surgical mask.

Koszta Kid, there are irresponsible people all over the world and yes let's hope the situation will bite them in their back.

If the situation get any worse, guess we have to join the Singaporeans and leave the country.

I read a French news report that has burning in China and India creating similar unhealthy conditions. Millions of people are being told to stay inside which is hardly a solution.
