If we can survive on potatoes and eggs, we shall not starve. My husband and I dug the potatoes this morning and as soon as the dirt falls off them (and us) I'll weigh them out. Finally there is something on this farm that will outweigh me! We put in Yukon Gold, despite the local lore that nematodes will eat up white potatoes, and only red potatoes will do well. We have lovely Yukons, lots of them. The Red LaSodas did really well, too. We were both dripping with sweat, dirty as can be, and grinning from ear to ear. I can hardly wait to get to the feed store and show off our nematode-less Yukons!
"We were both dripping with sweat, dirty as can be, and grinning from ear to ear." Only a true gardener would say such a thing!! So glad you got your potatoes up and that they are going to prove that white potatoes can be nematode free.
Sounds fabulous! Wishing now I had planted potatoes! I love that feeling when someone tells you something can't be done and you show them that yes, it CAN!
Netty, potatoes are so inexpensive at the grocery that it really doesn't pay to use garden space to grow them, unless you have lots of space. We do, and we like to experiment, so we have vegetables in the garden that most folks wouldn't bother with. Your gardens look absolutely stunning, and you are growing what you like to eat, and what you may not be able to get fresh locally. I must admit I've been executing "bragging rights" about the Yukon Golds. People around here are getting tired of me boasting about growing "white potatoes."
Jane, I just tilled and hilled my potatoes for the first time. you are so fortunate to be eating fresh ones. They taste ever so much better.
Congratulations! It does make a person feel good to do something that others say can't be done. You show 'em girl!
