When reading this thread http://www.gardenstew.com/threads/what-dish-represents-your-state-province.36267/ I thought about our national cheese brunost. Hardly anybody but Norwegians like it, but one foreigner loved it and made a film about it: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10152619523257019 I found his reaction hilarious, but then... I'm Norwegian dontcha know?
Interesting . . . . I love cheese, I love flatbread, and I love jam, but all three together? Of course, Texas has that Frito pie thing, so I shouldn't be critical. His reaction is funny, and his attempts at pronouncing some of the words is pretty good, too!
If I ever make it to Norway guess what cheese I'll be trying? Actually, over here, cheese and jam together are eaten quite bit. I haven't tried it myself but others say they really do go together well and taste wonderful. However I don't think I'd be much good at pronouncing the Norwegian words!!
Oh, he did very well indeed. I was so impressed with him. What got me is the fact that he loves the cheese. Most foreigners are sceptical to it, and few like that cheese at all. Brown goat cheese has a very distinct taste. I compare it to Marmite. You sort of have to grow up with it in order to like it. I've never tried it with jam but I like to put sliced apples on it. A thick slice of dark bread, butter and that cheese on top keeps me going for hours.
Droopy I am one who probably would not like the cheese. I have tried some of the mild goat cheese we produce here in Wisconsin. The taste is just not my thing. But one thing I do love is a good slice of Sharp Cheddar cheese in between two pieces of homemade bread spread with grape jam. Yummy. Like you said it sounds strange but goes so well together. Ya hey!
Droopy, maybe a bit late, but I just came across your post & watched the video. The way this guy presents the cheese is very amusing, it certainly made me laugh. Especially his efforts to pronounce the words. Funny! The cheese sounds like something I'd definitely try. I love cheese, and where I grew up, the south of the Netherlands (province of Limburg), cheese is traditionally eaten in a similar way, with apple syrup instead of jam. (apple syrup is a sticky brown spread made mainly from apples, sold here in every supermarket) Equally sweet. A great combination. Tastes best when cheese tastes stronger, so I think the brown cheese must be yummy!
That does look interesting, I would have to at least have a bite of the plain cheese. I am guessing that the addition of jam is to cut the strong taste of the cheese a bit. Jane, you do know that Frito Pie isn't a real pie but a bowl of Fritos covered with chili and cheese?
Oh...but I am another foreigner that likes this cheese. I first had it on one of the trips Droopy made down this way. I did not dare to ask her to send some, for it is heavy and would have cost a fortune...but I had promised that I would come up and visit at some point. In the meantime I had forgotten the name of the cheese, but with the help of Droopy and her man the name was recalled. I was delighted and I ate some again when I was visiting up there. Those guys presented me with a block of it as a "Goodbye, go-away, Go back home, hasta la vista, baby" gift. Of course they just wanted to get rid of me, but I was beside myself-- a whole block to eat! I told them that I'd gladly leave now. When we were going back to Denmark on the ferry, we had some Norwegian money still and had to spend that so we bought some chocolates and such for the folks back home. My bride also some some similar cheese and bought that as well...you know--sort of like a back-up. The bloke said that it would be more aged or stronger than the usual, but my bride and I were pretty sure that we'd like it too. You can see that the gift cheese from Droopy is almost gone....kabouters in the night, no doubt. As you may know the Netherlands is a cheese land and one doesn't just go and buy some cheese--the choices in the supermarket are massive...but when you go into a cheese shop, welllll.....if you do not know what you want, you could be there for some time. There are so many varieties. See what I mean? This shop is tiny, but they have oodles of choices. We put things in our cheese as well to add or alter the flavour. At any rate...Thanks to Droopy and co., our cheese appreciation has been expanded. Thanks Droopy. BTW--We shall try the cheese like the chap in the vid tomorrow with our own home-made strawberry jam.
I am suffering from a serious case of cheese envy! Oh, we love cheese, and have to settle for the supermarket varieties. They're good, but not very adventuresome. When you travel Sjoerd, we all get to enjoy your experiences, if not the tastes!
Jane if you ever find a Central Market or Whole Foods, they have many more cheese choices than the regular grocery store. Plus the Texas Cheese House in Lorena, south of Waco on I-35 sells several varieties of artisan, locally made cheeses. They don't have much on the website but much more in the store the last time we were there.
Thanks Jane. I like all kinds of cheese, not only Dutch and Norwegian ones. I have also been to cheese farmers that live in the countryside outside of my town. What a thrill it is to go there. When we had our annual Cousins' Day a few years ago, we went to one of these places and our group of 18 made cheese ourselves and took it home. That was fun.
Oh my goodness, Sjoerd! Do you still have some of that big block left? I prefer the darker, stronger brown cheese that you bought yourselves to the lighter one we gave you, but since the flavour is so distinct we thought we'd ease you into it. The cheese shop photos makes me drool. I still yearn for the white goat cheese with allium ursinum that I got from the market. I can't find anything like it here, so I make do with ordinary hard, white goat cheese and sprinkle dried allium ursinum on it. That's as close as I can get.
Hiya Droopy. Well, the cheese that you gave us is gone and we are working on the darker one now. My bride and I both agree that we prefer the taste of the darker one. Thanks for your consideration when easing us into it. hahaha--You coulda known that we'd lurve it though, ermmmmm....this is Holland, y'know. We do cheese here. cackle. That goat cheese with daslook that you got here and liked so much--there's good news: There is coming a food market to our town soon and you won't have to wait for a special market a couple of days a year. When it is up and running, I'll have a look for the cheese and we can talk.
And now I started drooling again. I think it's lunch time. Two thick slices of dark bread, butter, brown cheese and a couple of apple slices on top. Yummy! Oh, wish I were closer to you. I'd love to visit the market and check out more special cheese.
