I was just wondering if anyone besides me has ever found anything unusual in their bird baths. Many years ago when I lived in the cit of Sturgeon Bay, Wis. I started having some really yucky things showing up in my bird bath.
One morning when I went out to check the bird bath and see if it needed water I got quite the surprise. There in my bird bath was a small skull with two eye balls floating in the water looking right at me. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I thought maybe a raccoon had come and washed it's supper in the dead of night.
Then a few days later I went out to check the water and this time I found two small baby rabbit legs that had been left floating in the bird bath. Yuck! Yuck!
So for several days I watched the bird bath to see if I could spot any critter who might be using my bird bath to wash it's meals in.
Well low and behold if a crow didn't fly in and start washing what was left of something it had caught for lunch. Yuck again. We did have a pair of resident crows that nested in some big pine tree about a block from my home.
I checked out crow behavior and sure enough. They will sometimes wash their food before eating it. Just not in my bird bath please.
So I moved the bird bath closer to the house and they left it alone. Phew, was I ever glad.

Yuck indeed!! I'd hate to find bits of animals floating in my birdbath. :smt078 Thank goodness you moved it nearer to the house and the crows decided to wash up elsewhere.

Well, I guess I won't have breakfast this morning  .
The only thing I've found in our birdbath is a frog. How he managed to get up there I don't know, but there he sat, about 3 ft. off the ground, smack dab in the center of the bird watering station. Oh, he was alive and well, by the way!

Oh my! That is sort of funny. While reading that post I couldn't help thinking Tooty angered the neighbor and they added a Piranha to the birdbath for revenge.

Marlingardener soo sorry about the gruesome details. That would be an effective weigh loss program I guess. ;)

Barb now that would have been a sight. It was in spring so I couldn't blame it on the neighbors doing a Halloween prank. :stew1:

What a story you have to tell about...I only find dirt in mine but I have heard that the hawks will drown little birds to kill them as they are twisting them. Never had it happen here though.Thank goodness.

Sherry8 I am glad you only find dirt in your bird bath. Where we live now I have not had any of the local crows visit my birdbath. I'm sure it is because they are very close to the house.

KK Ng ya it sure was Yuck. I find crows to be very interesting to watch. They are super smart which is probably why they get to so much mischief and can cause some real problems. They try and harass our two resident Red Tail Hawks but don't push it to far as the Hawks do eat crows. :stew1:
