I sprained an ankle at work Monday, and I have lots of garden work to do and can't. Trying to teach the missus to dust the cabbages and kohlrabi is most unpleasant. The Japanese Beetles are back, and I need to spread more milky spore too. I'm still making it to work, just moving much more slowly than usual. Two more relatively easy days, and then a difficult Friday. Must mow the lawn and etc. too. I never realized how much I did after work until I couldn't. C'est la Vie.
Ouch FBG, I do hope you try and take it easy. Sprains are nasty and it is hard to rush recovery. The more you use the foot the longer it will take to heal. Rest, relax, heal, drink a cold one, Jerry
FBG, I know how you are feeling. Take it easy so you can get back out there sooner. I pulled my back in early April and couldn't do any gardening until late May and since then only a couple of hours 1 or 2 days a week....and there is so much more to do.
OUCH!! Your ankle won't heal if you keep using it so 'bite the bullet' and rest until it feels better. I'm sure your wife will help all she can in the garden but the grass will still be there when your ankle heals. Take care.
While you are laid up, and unable to spend a lot of time in the garden, COOK! Your posted recipes are great, and I bet you can mix up a delicious meal, even on crutches. You can share your recipes with the rest of us. :-D Very sorry to hear of your pain and problem. The garden will still be there, as will the lawn, just waiting for you. Let it wait--you and your mobility are more important than anything else.
Sorry to hear this. Hope you feel better soon. And SOAK your ankle/foot, whatever hurts, in epsoms salt solution. this always helps. If you do homeopathic medicine, hit up your local pharmacy that carries natural and homeopathic medicine for some Arnica gel or cream. Slather it on and let it soak in. It draws out the pain and inflammation and bruising very well, but it does work best if it is used immediately.
Sorry to hear about your sprained ankle FBG. I once sprained my ankle so bad the doctor said I would have been better off breaking it... that he could fix... but a sprain, that's all a matter of time. Please do take it easy. You don't want to go through months and months of hobbling around on crutches (like stubborn old me!)
FBG hopefully we can be your gardening substitute until you are better. We can't do your gardening chores but we can scratch the gardening itch. Get well soon.
Sorry to hear about your ankle. But you've still got a good one, right? I know what you mean. My flower garden is away and I go there a couple of hours twice a day and then on Saturday (all day). It's a small gaden but always way to much to do. Yesterday it was one of those days. I was anxious to get there (after work, by bus... 30 mins) but of course my parents had other plans for me. I climbed the ladder and picked sour cherries. Then helped my mom to wash them and remove the pits. That was all. Couldn't even take some pictures, etc. Oh... I managed to collect the seeds from a plant. That's really all! But I love that sour cherry jam or syrup mom makes so I can't complain! Anyway......... I hope you feel better already!
I'll second what the others have told you: Stay still! I've found that sore limbs make for creative solutions but they aren't helping with the healing process at all. The lawn and weeds won't run away. If they should try to, make certain your garden gate's open. I hope you'll get better soon. In the meantime read a garden book or another book.
So sorry about your injury. A friend here had a nasty fall and tore the ligaments and some tendons in his leg. He has a cast and may need surgery and will be laid up some time. A sprain should heal much sooner and easier than that if you take good care of it. If you had a riding mower, you could cheat a little on the mowing if need be. They are very handy for people with mobility probs. Your wife will probably do okay with dusting the garden veggies with that stuff.
Weeelllll, a little update. For those that don't know, I work on my feet, walking. I earn my living as a trashman, garbageman, dustman, garbo, refuse collector, or whatever it is called in your country or region or city. I have'nt missed work. I can't afford to. After all, where and when I grew up, if the work didn't get done, you went hungry. So I endevour to persevere. I finished my rounds today, and was sent to'help' someone else about half my age. My boss said, 'even at 50% you're better than most of the rest I have here'. I replied, 'I wish that would have shown when I was due a raise.' Bruising and swelling are still manageble, pain is another story. I'm thankful that I have a high pain tolerance. I have a three day weekend coming up with the Independance Day holiday and all. I should be nearly up to speed by July 5th. Thanks for all the well wishes. You are all too kind. I was just wishing to vent a bit.
Are you wearing one of those compression socks? That really helped when I messed up my ankle a few years ago. It eventually healed but is still weak :-? You know what they say...You don't realize how much you use something till it hurts
At least your boss is cutting you some slack with your injured ankle. I guess we just call it 'trashman' here. That is still a very important job! Just think how awful things would get if someone did not do it. I have heard some call it a 'sanitation engineer' Too bad he doesnt let you drive the truck and the young guys get out and hoist the stuff into the back end. Rest your foot over the long weekend, and let someone else do the hard stuff.
