A woman with a mission: Get May 17-plants for the entrance area and some proper soil, and don't spend too much, please! Well, here's what I bought: Here's the arrangement planted up. The red Verbena have lots of buds and are under orders to hurry up and look brighter before May 17th: The orange ones in the box are Lewisia, they've got new homes in the most eastward westside border. We've tidied up the borders today, and I used a trick my grandmother taught me. She said to leave the grass of crocus, narcissi and muscari to die down because the bulbs needed the extra strength. In order to make removing it easy and the borders look tidy while we wait, she tided them down nicely with a knot like this: Once they're all yellow, it's so easy to remove the grass. No mess. I'll take the opportunity to show a couple of narcissi blooming. These are semi-mini's, about 15 cm/6 inches: These are tall and have a lovely fragrance: The Primula sieboldii have started. They've got furry, lobed leaves and don't look like primroses at all: I also saved a lot of money today by NOT buying the lovely cone spruce with silver new growth, the Japanese maple with red, yellow and green leaves and those two Paeonia suffruticosa, tree peonies, I drooled over! But I did buy ten Tagetes, marigolds, and bright orange they were too. They're residing in between what roses are left to the south of the house. I've been out all day, sorry if I ramble, I'm tired.
Your plants look lovely. I did what I said I wouldn't do and bought some annual plants yesterday. I wasn't going to plant anything until we came back from Glenda's. But, we had an hour to spare before I had to be to work yesterday and stopped at WalMart. Those petunias, dianthus and marigolds just started shouting, "Buy me, buy me!" Well, who could resist. We bought eleven six paks. That's about 66 plants. But, I will get them in pots and put the pots by the fence so the neighbor can water them while we are gone. They will make a bright spot to cheer us up after the long ride home. dooley

Love that primrose, very unusual. Glad you saved some money also. A very tricky matter when buying plants, such evil temptations.
Well you may have saved money by not buying the 'cone spruce with silver new growth, the Japanese maple with red, yellow and green leaves and those two Paeonia suffruticosa, tree peonies' but if I'd been with you you would have left with them and far more!!!! Just think yourself lucky that I live so far away from you. I think those red verbena are gorgeous and would probably have bought every one that was up for sale.
I really love all the colors. I was going to say something about the red, white & blue but then Toni said you have independence day coming up. Happy holiday for you. Do you all have Mothers Day this Sunday?? I was going to get to pick out some flowers but they were all wilted or frost bitten. I'll have to go somewhere else to buy some plants. I like the last pict. they look like little individual hearts connected together, so pretty.

Is that the so-called, "hanging lobelia"? I like lobelia, you can do lots of different things with them. I commend you for having such inner strength of characte....noble, but no fun. Roarrrrr....
Thank you all. I'm fairly good at avoiding temptation occasionally, but never feel safe! That little cone spruce might end up in our garden a little later in the season. I'm glad you succumbed to temptations, Dooley. EJ and Eileen: The worst is to go shopping with other plant lovers. I'm glad I went alone. My darling husband is rather hopeless when it comes to temptations, though. Worse than me. The plants are in a pot, but I photographed from straight above so it looks like they're in the ground. Thank you for good Independence Day wishes. We can't always have plants outside on May 17th due to the cold, but this year's fine. Sjoerd, it's a so-called edging lobelia, so it won't grow too long. Just right for the pot I hope. We had Mother's day in February, Petunia. And Father's Day in November. Those Primula also come in white and bluish, more pink and with fringy edges. I'll probably show some more when they bloom.
Very nice choices you made, for the holiday entrance. Were on our way to town today for our red, white and blue flowers also,, altho mine might just be on the kitchen table for decoration until they can go out. I'll cut some birch in a few days so they will be bloomed also by the 17th. The flowers in the yard already look great, and just so happy where they are. Thank your mom for the crocus tip,, mine have all just died back and i was going to cut them out today! I'll tie them instead.
This is another reason why I like the stew. I'm finding out all of us have our holidays at differant times. I guess it would make sense but kinda seems strange but on the other hand you all probably think ours holidays are strange at our times too-hee hee. I just love the stew and everyone from differant parts of the world. Happy Holidays all.
