We where so thrilled to see the Red Headed Woodpecker return to our feeders. They are considered to be one the endangered list because of loss of habitat. So glad we do not cut down our dead trees as they use them for nesting cavities. Not sure if this is a male or female as they have the same markings. I think it is one of the few Woodpeckers that both sexes look alike.

Oh what a handsome bird!! Let's hope it has a mate and breeds in your dead trees. Wouldn't it be wonderful if you could see youngsters coming into your garden.
Oh, I saw one of those on a part of the apartment lawn the other day. But, it must have seen me watching it because it took off across the marshy area. I haven's seen it since. It's a beautiful bird. Thanks for giving it a name for me. We do have some red wing blackbirds, too.
Thanks all. We love that they have returned this year again. Some years you never know if one bird you had the summer before will be there the next summer. One bird I miss not seeing at our feeders is the Brown Thrasher. They also have a great sounding song.
