What about the red onions that didn't sprout?

I bought a red onion set - 100 little bulbs that I planted in May following the instructions on the bag. I'd estimate about half of them have grown judging by the green onion stalks above the ground.

They're watered, fed, and weeded regularly. They're in a good spot to get over 8 hours of a sun a day if our weather would actually stop being cloudy and give us some sun. The green onion stalks above the ground are between 6" and 12".

What happened to the rest of them? Do they stay dormant and will they grow next year? Did a bird eat them? Were they just duds?

Since they are all planted in the same location and getting the same treatment I would guess that the ones not showing up are duds.

I planted onion sets this spring and I had quite a few that didn't grow. My mistake was forgetting to take them out of the plastic bag the day I got them. I think a few of them got moldy and that killed them and a few of them were dried out. I planted them anyhow hoping there was at least a chance to get something from them. My second patch looks a little thin in spots :( but anything that doesn't grow this year is probably dead.

They were in a mesh bag. I planted them either the day I bought them or the next day. No way of knowing how long they'd been waiting. Could have dried out in the bag I guess. Or duds.

Could have rotted in the ground if you have had a lot of rain.

May be less duds than I thought. I looked at the package they came in and there was 70 not 100.

The good news is my husband was working on that little onion bed last night and boxed it in with garden ties. Or as far as he could go before he ran out of ties! So now there's more definition to where the lawn ends and the garden begins!
