For those of us in the US, today is a holiday. This is th day we celebrate Memorial Day which is typically the last Monday in May, and is reserved to remember those who died in active military service. It's a day of BBQ's and yard work, kids out of school and hopefully nice weather. Sometimes I get this day off and sometimes not. Today I don't. But it will be a shorter than usual day at least, so I at least get a little extra time off. What about you? What are your plans for this day?
Since it is raining here in Central Ohio,I won't go to the parade. But do have some precooked baby back ribs that I will heat in the oven. Will probably watch the old war movies on tv.
Digging potatoes! Our LaSoda Reds are ready to dig, and I enjoy getting those little red gems out of the dirt (I know, I need to get out more). Then I'm going to get out the grill and do a little 'cue. My husband will be shredding (mowing) the pasture.
Getting some plants in the ground and pulling some pecan saplings out of the ground. Then taking photos of all my new junque and getting them posted. But I have put the good old Stars and Stripes out front to wave in the breeze and sent out many thoughts of thanks for those who have given everything they could to keep their respective countries free.
WORK! Work, work, work. This should be renamed May Labor Day. The garden needs to finish being planted , but I am not the typical gardener. I have 70 ish foot rows of everything. I have 60 tomatoes that may need to be replaced after this last weekend. We had 24f on Saturday morning. The day before was cold and windy. I have peppers, tomatoes, muskmelon, watermelon, kohlrabi, cabbage, broccoli, assorted seeds, cukes, zukes, beans etc. to get in today, but it is coldish and damp today.
We're picking up tree branches from the storms that came through last night. If it dries out enough, I'll do some more planting, but it's not looking good for that.
took a weeks holiday from work as the kids have broken up for half term, so I get to spend the week with my family went to feed the ducks today with my little girl . . . . the pond we went to however just had a lone male swan patrolling, he didn't seem to keen on our hovis 50/50 either :-D good day all the same
My day is done. I planted 90 tomatoes. Kevin planted one row of cantaloupe and a row (70' long) of watermelon. I had a few customers my sister came and cleaned my kitchen while I was outside...yay! She even brought me 4 nice containers of composted rabbit manure, which I used 3 of them while planting tomatoes. Tomorrow ( i hope) i will plant the peppers.
Today was spent watering my flowers and kicking back in my favorite chair and basking in the glory that uninvited people finally went home after invading my home for 24 hours. I did make sure to take the time to remember and give thanks to all of the people who have and continue to protect our freedoms.
We put out 26 cubic yards of mulch. That finished the front gardens. I will be getting another 26 cubic yards on Thursday. That is all we should need for the year. 52 cubic yards, MAYBE. Wow! That was allot of work.....
I had to laugh at this! I really don't enjoy uninvited guests dropping in. My kids do it from time to time....but they're family, they can come and go as they please and I don't have to stop what I'm doing to visit with them. And especially when those that have them bring the grandkids, that's fun! But other folks? No. No thank you. Bad enough they drop in for a quick afternoon visit. But 24 hours? Wow, that really sucks. :-x It's funny, I expected, when I posted this question, that more of you would be grilling out, at the beach, going to the latest movie etc. But I guess I shouldn't be too surprised at how many of you were out in your gardens doing stuff on the holiday. This is, after all, a gardening forum! I mean, really! What was I thinking? moderator's note: removed double posting see point 3.6 of usage rules
Yeah Ronni, I was thinking the same thing...we are gardeners. What perfect day to work in the garden ALL day. Grill? uh-huh...at 7:00pm.
