Well, Donna, I'm not sure what your tastes are, nor how much room you have in your garden, but black-eyed peas are being planted now in our part of Texas for harvesting in late September. If you want to start some squash inside, you can put it out in August and have pickings before cold weather sets in. I'm talking summer squash, of course! If you'd like to have green beans, they can be direct sown in late August to mid-September. The yield won't be tremendous, but you'll have several nice meals from the bushes. We set out broccoli transplants in late September, along with planting sugar peas. Sometimes the weather fools us and we don't get much in the way of peas, but the broccoli always comes through for us (and my husband is thrilled--no really, just thrilled ).
Donna, those are all great suggestions from Jane. We just planted bush beans, runner beans, cucumbers, potatoes and today I am hoping to get in beets. Now is the time to get in lettuce for the fall, too (for us). Swiss chard cabbage/cauliflower
