What countries other than your own, have you visited?

Droopy's post about Norway got me to thinking about this. I think people living in Europe do more traveling outside their own country than we do here in the states. Before I make my list, remember I was in the US Navy for 22 years. 1 Viet Nam, 2 Hong Kong, 3 Singapore, 4 Phillipines,5 England, 6 Germany, 7 France, 7 Spain,8 Italy,9 Greece, 10 Lebanone, 11 Israel, 12 Eygpt, 13 Mexico, 14 Canada. And I have been in almost every state east of the Mississippi River.

 

Some of mine, I visited 4 or 5 times. Like France, Spain, Italy and Greece. The ones that I liked the most were England, I could understand them somewhat! And if I went ashore in uniform, I got a lot of free beer! I loved Rome at Christmas time. Naples, I am sorry to say has a bad reputation with the Navy. We used to call it the armpit of the Med.

 

One of the best experiences I had was being able to go to Christmas Eve midnight Mass at the Vatican. I was so close to the altar that I could have almost spit on Pope John Paul. Rome was very pretty that night with all the lights and everything.

 

Americans

Lots of americans go to the Vatican,,,,,,
Annual trip here they say in our catholic papers.
My husband was in the air force stationed in Germany belgium, And did get to see most of europe..England.

 

Oops, I forgot some! 15 Haiti, 16 Puerto Rico, 17 US Virgin Islands and Cuba, the US base there.

 

I have been to New Jersey

Just kidding. I have traveled to Ireland, England (lived there two different times), Canada, Mexico, France, Libya (long time ago) and Spain (Canary Islands).

 

We have had the house at the lake to go to for our vacations, and as a result, have not traveled outside the US. With the exception of Canada, where we spent 2 days, going up the north side of Lake Superior. We don't have passports. I've often thought that in Europe going from country to country is something like going State to State here, except for the passport and inspections. From what I see in the news, lots of folks in some European countries don't like Americans, I'd be uncomfortable being a tourist where I'm not welcomed. However I have an interest in history, and here our history only goes back 5 or 6 hundred years, where as over there is more like several thousand years. I'm not a fan of flying, so until we can do something like the Brit's did, and shoot a tunnel over to England, I'll likely (in the words of Dinah Shore), see the USA in my Chevrolet.

Whew, you ARE well traveled Capt! I never went anywhere much 'till I married a man who lived in TaiPei through his teen years. Then he dragged me off to California and the enchantment that held me here was broken for a time. I've been to Canada several times, and, years ago, two weeks in the Phillippines. With a stopover in Korea. Where I got shadowed by a suspicious agent in the little space we were shuffled into. Because the King of Khartoum was passing through. Guess he thought I was a subversive- oh yes, a "threatening" 20 yr old terrified American. 'Nuff traveling for me, thankyouverymuch!

 

I've been to Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Poland, Lithuania, France, Switzerland, Spain, Greece, Cyprus, Israel and England. I'm not particularly well travelled at all after Norwegian standards.

We can just pack up and go, but it takes at least eight hours to get from here to Oslo. Once we're in Denmark, though, it will take us only two more days to get to Italy. I dearly want to see more of eastern Europe, it's very different from the west I've heard.

I've been to:

Mexico, England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Belgium, Germany (East, West & re-unified), the Netherlands, Austria & Italy.

Loved how green the British Isles are - would love to go back to all of that! My dad has developed into quite an Anglophile, so he goes once a year to take courses at - OXFORD! I think the courses are just for fun - he's not getting a degree & at age 74, he doesn't really need another degree now. I really liked Brugges, Belgium. Really nice little town.

 

As I said, one of my favorites was England. We had pulled into Portsmouth on the USS Nimitz. Some of us went ashore to go to a pub, where else, and I looked to the left and started to step into the street to cross. This Brit reached out and grabbed me by the collar and yanked me back onto the sidewalk just in time to keep me from being run down by a double decker bus coming from the right! My first experience with driving on the wrong side of the road. The pub we went to was really neat. The owner had a shelf running all around the outside walls about 18 inches below the ceiling. On these were his collection of Chamber Pots! Now you don't see something like that in the states. Most had flowers etc on them and were very pretty. The more beer you drank, the prettier they got too!

 

Getting used to driving on the wrong side is easy. It's much harder to turn back once you're back home! Of course, to them it's the right side. England is really something, I often miss it.

 

I've only been to Canada, a few countries in the Carribean... Nassau, St. Paul, Puerto Rico, and an island I can't remember the name of, lol! They'll sure feed you a lot of booze when you're playing with a band on a cruise ship! Let's see... an accidental trip to Tijuana with a friend in the Navy, naturally.
Seen most of the Southern states, almost every inch of the West coast, and my first trip to Hawaii is booked for November. Hopefully all this will change with the seemingly mythical European tour we're aiming for. Old-timey rock and roll is a lot more popular over there, so I think it's a plausible solution!
