First, I am not referring to members of the Stew, whom I find to be very literate, and who use words correctly. Your posts are a joy to read.
But, I am on two other forums, and find that spelling "definitely (definately)", "restaurant (resturunt)", "couple (cuple)", among other abnormalities make it hard to understand some posts, and also casts doubt on the general reliablity of the poster.
What happened to spelling words correctly? Are there no spelling tests, no rules (like q is always followed by u ) taught?
Thank you for listening to my rant, or "listning to my rate".

Chatspeak is becoming the bane of English teachers everywhere and of those of us who have to translate it in order to understand what is being said. That's why it isn't allowed on GardenStew.

If used often enough the brain forgets how to spell and some school districts have dropped spelling as a part of the curriculum in favor of more sports classes.

It only takes about a minute to open another browser, enter in the word the way you think it is spelled and find out if you are correct (sorry but even SpellCheck doesn't catch all of the errors)
Some of the errors may not be a lack of spelling knowledge but just not proof reading the posts before hitting the Submit button too.

Have you seen the T-shirts that have "There, Their...They're not the same" but that's yet another grammar gripe I have too.

Oh Great!! First I find out kids can't read(cursive). I asked one if they could write...."No" was the reply. Now I find out they can't spell. :-( I suppose next I will find out they can't do math. Deja vu middle ages.

Thanks to texting, any word can be misspelled these days. It's a habit for some.

I use chatspeak when texting and chatting amongst friends, but I try my best to use proper grammer and spelling elsewhere, and it really annoys me when I see people (kids and adults!) misusing these. I want to smack them upside the head and ask where the heck they went to school *lol*

Poor spelling and grammar is one of my pet peeves! I can't stand reading posts that make no sense or run on without punctuation marks and capital letters. I am so glad it's not allowed here (I didn't know that!) It also really bothers me that my 3rd grade daughter doesn't have spelling tests, homework, or know how to do long division or cursive writing!

BIG words seem to be a problem, too. No comprehension of their definitions  nor the ability to go define them.

I love cursive, it made me so sad to learn it's no longer taught, it seemed like such a rite of passage! I can still tell if someone went to Catholic School, their handwriting is so pretty.

I'm in your club too. :D Being Norwegian my English isn't always correct, neither in spelling nor in grammar or sentence structure, but I try my very best.

Norway has the same problem. The teachers have almost given up trying to correct the children, and lots of parents just don't care any more. *sigh*

My children find me horrible since I practically sit on them to correct their writing errors. I hope they'll thank me later in life. :D

I love the English Language and hate to see it abused. Spelling, grammar and punctuation are important and I wish the children of today would be taught the way we were. Thankfully all three of my children are old enough to have been taught these disciplines which, sadly, now appear to be falling by the wayside.

I'm the worst speller in the world. Even spell check can't help-can't figure what I'm talking about.I do skip read and write. Some of my recipes come out badly. Then I go back and read over. And since I had seizure 2 years ago has gotten worse. But meds helped. Couldn't garden right-bending over made me dizzy.Thank God Oldest Son didn't have my problem. His Book is selling well.

The type of seizure I had makes me skip write. My spelling never was good. And if I read instruction someone sends to get better on CP-have to read it many times. But my best friend is a doctor. Said very common type of seizure. I had car accident minor one. Good friend also is Chief of Police. He followed me up town. when he told me what I did-thought he was nuts. I didn't drive for 1 1/2 year -found right med. One all most killed me. VERY close But Doc said many people don't stop driving.Even after told not to.
