First, what I got. I treated myself the other day with my money from my little side job. It was only $10, but I bought two new daylilies, surprise, surprise, right. I got Night Beacon, a rebloomer, which is a black purple with a chartreuse center, very lovely. And I got Dream Legacy, not a rebloomer, it is cream with a deep wine throat and a wine picotee edge. Second, what I did. Well since it hasn't rained yet I put everything else on hold, except feeding the hungry crowd here, and I worked in my yard. I got one bed almost totally cleaned out, planted some pansies, and mulched. There was a spot between the bed and a large gardenia that had to be mowed with the push mower, not anymore. I cleaned it out, put some thick layers of corrugated cardboard that I get from work, and mulched it. Now I will be able to go around the whole area with the riding mower. Before the cooking starts again, boy wouldn't it be nice if I could train them not to eat, I am going to plant some violas and at least one of the daylilies. I haven't decided if I want them both in this bed. I thought I had lost some of the daylilies here, but when I pulled back the old mulch and dried grass they were there, popping there pretty little heads up. The bed also has crocosmia, a red lantana, a mexican heather and a white plumbago, and a blue daze, if they come back that is. I also have a milk and wine crinum lily some La. irises and a bengal tiger canna. It is a small bed, so if everything comes back I will have to move some of it out, or extend the bed and move the bigger stuff back. I needed to get all of this out of pots last year and that is why this bed evolved. Well, back to the yard. :-D :-D
Ohhhh, the black purple lily sounds gorgeous. I am planning to add more almost black flowers to my gardens this year. Glad you got to do some work out there today, it looks like I have about two weeks before I can get out there again.
I know Toni, y'all got pounded. I feel so blessed that we have missed the rain so far. I ended up planting both daylilies. When I opened Night Beacon it had new growth about six inches long, so I opened the other, same thing. I covered them lightly with oak leaves so the sun will not scald them, if it ever comes out. I got them both at WalMart Toni. I bought an expensive daylily from a catalog and it died, these thrive like crazy so I stick with them.
Well, I am not a big lily fan....I mean I like them and all of that, but I think I have to go find those. The ones I planted last year were too shaded, but I have 6 Stella d'Oro and 6 purple called Grape Magic. I hope I get to see them this year since I did move them last fall. http://www.homesteadfarms.com/images/Da ... eMagic.jpg
Thanks Eileen, I appreciate that. I hope they bloom this year, sometimes it is the second or even third year before you get a good bloom. Toni, they should be fine, daylilies are really tough, if they can grow in my waterlogged clay soil they can grow anywhere. Stella is an everblooming, it will bloom all season long. I also have Grape Magic, it is a mid-late season rebloomer and is dormant. So if it hasn't appeared yet don't give up hope.
Oh Cajunbelle those are just beautiful.I must go to Super WalMarts in Huntsville as ours has nothing plus I need to get my pictures develope .I'm afraid to even think of it because of my horror last time :'( I do love Lilies.I just don't have many.
I have the old fashioned orange with black specks and I have a plain yellow. They have been here for ages. I am thinking of adding more this year. Wannabe
Sharon the lilies you bought are gorgeousssss!! I have orange daylilies and I would love to have lots more this year. I think a trip to the local super Walmart is in order!!lol Eileen thanks for posting the pics so we can see how beautiful Sharon's new lilies are!!
They don't call you the Daylily Diva for nothing Sharon. Nice to hear that work is being done in gardens again. Thanks also Eils for posting the photos and giving us a visual reference, wow those are beautiful! As regards feeding the folks Sharon, why not make a new plant = dinner agreement
"As regards feeding the folks Sharon, why not make a new plant = dinner agreement" Frank, that is an excellent idea, I'm surprised I didnt' think of it myself. "And aren't you clever to do away with that little mowing headache." I have a couple of more spots that will be gone as soon as I can get to them. I hate getting the push mower out, but at least we don't have to cut the whole place with it anymore.
Those really are exceptional in their coloring - wow!! You make me want to go find some to add to my yard too!
I think they are great colors. I don't have any daylilies here. I saw some primroses that I thought about buying the other day. They were in pots for two dollars each. They need shade and I'm not sure they would survive our summers. But, then I thought if they are for sale here they should. Now, it's too late. Dooley
