Ok, I have had this guy for about a year and a half. This year when I brought it in for winter. The center of, just about every, leaf started to brown going up and down the leaf. Talked to a friend, she suggested cut the “damaged” leave out. I did that, the leaves that appeared to have no brown on them started to do it. And of course the leaves that were cut are dying. I have not a clue what is going on, and I really hope someone can help me save this plant.
Jodie how much water are you giving your plant? Are there any babies attached to it? Has it only just started to brown? I think the answer will be in the roots, and suggest you take it out of the pot and have a look. Having a little prepared new compost would be a help.
I am suspecting too much water and perhaps the plant has been too cool. Tetters also has a good idea to inspect the roots. Curious problem, this.
How long has this plant been in the same pot/soil ? Is it in potting soil ? I would do the same and look at the roots while changing soil ! Purchased potting soil wiil not hold water unless you allow it to soak ! I would use compost or topsoil instead !
Thank you all. I got brave and pulled it out of the pot. And well, it’s water logged, bad. Which is weird cause I only water it when the top 2ish inches are dry. I repotted with new potting soil and a super clean pot. The roots looked good, nice and white and mostly thick. Fingers crossed it works!!!
Jodi— I would take that plant right back out of its new pot and let the moisture evaporate for say, two days indoors somewhere. Please be careful with your baby. It can recover from this. A couple of other things are: you could use a terra cotta pot because the moisture can be better regulated naturally. Also be sure that the new pot for your spider plant has a hole or holes in the bottom for drainage. Finally, you need to place a shallow dish under the flower pot. If you have more questions or want to discuss this further with me , feel free to send a PM. Good luck.
Does your pot have the bottom reservoir ? I have one like that and it will hold way too much water ! Ifit does just remove it and let the pot drain well when you add water ! These plants do not like a boggy soil !
My spider plants get lots of neglect, and get watered once in a blue moon. They multiply like rabbits as they make so many babies, and I just can't resist cutting them off and sticking them in pots. I usually add plenty of grit to my compost for easy watering and good drainage.
