It looks like a scented geranium. Does it have a citrusy odor to the leaves? If not citrus odor, perhaps chocolate or another identifiable odor?
If it is a scented geranium (pelargonium) it likes sun, but not the hot, beating-down sun of mid- to late afternoon. You can grow it in a pot, or in the ground (if you are in zone 9 or above). Fertilize lightly when it is actively growing, and keep the soil moist, but not soggy. Geraniums hate wet feet!
Pinching it back will make it bushier, and I think yours is a good candidate for a haircut. The cuttings can be placed in moist potting soil, or a mix of perlite and vermiculite, and they will develop roots and you'll have more plants to enjoy or give away.
