Just kidding. Although it looks like a large egg. But it is a Puff Ball mushroom that my hubby found on the property behind ours. There also edible, but look very weird.

I've seen a few of these mushrooms before and am always amazed at the size they can grow to. Yours is a real 'whopper.' Did you pick IT to eat by any chance? I doubt if I would know how to go about cooking it even if I did harvest one.

Eileen. No we did not eat it. I don't like mushrooms. But one of my girl friends loves them. She gets these from us and peels off the outside layer, slices them up and dips them in egg and then fries them. Or she cuts them up in cubes and freezes them then adds them to her soups or whatever. So if you like mushrooms you should try one. Make sure they are snowy white when you pick them.

We found and picked 2 Puffballs at work a few weeks back. We gave them to the Chef and he got very excited...so excited that he forgot to let us taste them!

Whoa, super big mushroom there! At first, I thought it was some type of melon, or a rock :D
With all the rain we had in June, and the high humidity, I have seen a lot more mushrooms this summer. But not that big!

That is one whale of a mushroom. We have a smaller variety around here.

Just dip the slices, (before it turns powdery) in an egg and milk batter, add a little beer if you like, then dip in some seasoned flour and fry them.

Hi all and thanks for your comments. I forgot to mention that it was last fall that we found this whopper. The ones around here usually don't get this big either. But we do have a lot of them that grow here.

Yes it sure would cover a lot of pizza. I can imagine the chefs joy as they are often thought of as a delicacy.

That sounds like a good way to eat them. I will have to tell my friend about putting beer in her batter.

Ya it does look like it could be snowman parts.

Philip: if I could I'd mail you a couple of them I would. I don't know if they would allow them to be shipped to you. :) You would love them as they have a mild flavor I'm told. :stew1:
