It's been a long, cold, snowy, (did I say long), Winter and we are all looking forward to Spring. It's coming, it really is, right??? Not fast enough for any of us, though. Let's share and celebrate the signs of Spring that we see in our gardens, shall we? Maybe some pictures?? Recent posts have mentioned.... Soccer registration, narcissi poking through... bald eagles beginning to sit on eggs.... hellebores... jasmine buds... seed packets... trainers, seedlings... Something I saw in my garden this morning: I saw Austin staring out the window, mesmerized by something. When I looked out, I saw a mourning dove poking around in the melting snow beneath a fig tree... gathering nesting materials. She's been gathering all morning.
Lot's of ice and snow melting! They say rain showers tonight and tomorrow, which we do not need. With 26 inches of snow, that equates to 2 1/2 inches of rain! Enough already!
Well, There are noty a lot of signs of spring in my lottie just yet. Perhaps the absence of snow? The plum buds are maybe a little more prominant. Netty up the way has Snowdrops blooming very close to the ground. The titmice are chasing eachother around. Daylilies are showing points. The mentioning of Austin and Mourning Doves--Yesterday when I was at the lottie, I noticed the wing of a Turkse Tortle Dove lying over by the Buddleja. A disturbing reminder of that CSI posting that I made last winter. Grizzly.
I have snowdrops flowering in the garden as well as some polyanthus and a few cyclamen. The daffodils are around 4-5 inches out of the soil and even my peony is throwing out new, red buds. However, it's -5° celsius and the ground is still covered in a layer of snow and frosted on top. The pond is frozen solid .... but .... spring is on its way!! :-D
I found this quote about spring, though it was appropriate for those of you who still have snow. Spring is when you feel like whistling even with a shoe full of slush. ~Doug Larson
I think every day will bring more little signs of Spring -- I just know it. The birds seem to be the first to get busy, doesn't it seem so, Bunkie and Sjoerd? (Sjoerd, what are you referring to when you say the CSI posting?) KG -- do you mean actual daffodils are blooming? Eileen -- whoowee for you bacause I know you're sick of snow. Take heart Capt Kirk, it will happen for us someday... I hope. I am envious of Sjoerd's "absence of snow..." I like that quote Gail, I have slush, not quite ready to whistle, but maybe if I try it, Spring will come faster.
The flowering quince seems covered with blooms now. The trees are all getting buds. There are little purple flowers coming up in the grass. I think Toni said they were henbit. There are some small white ones and some miniature yellow flowers that look like a dandelion. There are dandelions, too. Spring is here today. It's 70 degs and we opened the windows to air out the house. But it's going to be in the 50's again with rain this week. dooley
Yes DB...real daffs (my neighbors)...my Bradford Pear tree has buds that are almost open...and my Arizona Ash tree will have tiny leaves in a few more days...yippee!
No signs of spring in the garden but... The daylight is lasting longer into the evening, The snowbanks are getting smaller, The pavement is showing through the ice, NASCAR racing has started.
We had a spring weather today, the temperature was in the high 50's. 8) I spent 3 hours outside, raking, pulling weeds, and cleaning up the garden and then took a nice long walk to stretch out my sore back...which is always a sign of spring! Here are a few signs of spring from my yard. pansies ( photo / image / picture from gfreiherr's Garden ) worms ( photo / image / picture from gfreiherr's Garden ) paper wasp ( photo / image / picture from gfreiherr's Garden )
Oh! Worms... I was dreaming about worms as I tromped through the snow today. I had to blaze a trail to get to the composter. Thank you Gail...
