I have two raised beds put in by the previous owners. One is 4'x6' and the other is 4'x8'. Each spends half of the day in the shade of the neighbor's fence. The beds get sun from sun-up (5:30 - 6:00) to 1:00 in the afternoon, so they get about six or seven hours of sun. The rest of the day is in the shade.

I need some herb or veggie ideas that would thrive in that type of growing environment.

Lettuces, green bush beans, and almost all of the cool weather crops would do fine with 6 to 7 hours of sunlight. If you want to put in some herbs, parsley, the mints (but watch out, they spread!), dill, and borage (it gets BIG) will do well.

Tomatoes and peppers will do ok in 6-7 hrs sun. All beans and peas. 6 hrs is considered "Full sun".

Go for a salad bed. Beet, mixed italian blend, bibb, buttercrunch, basil, whatever you like for a salad. After 30 days or so, plant the other bed. Keep a crop going that way.
