I want to get two more barrels... one for rainwater collection and another for a compost bin.
There's a place in town that has lots of them... but they have been closed for the last week or so and I don't know where else I should look for some.
    Any suggestions?

Feed stores, some sell them for barrel racing and a friend of Randy's has gotten them from a car wash, they get the liquid soap in them.

Thanks for the suggestions Toni and KK.
I stopped at a full service car wash on my way home this evening... and JACKPOT! They didn't have the 55 gallon ones... but did have a 30 gallon. I offered to pay for it, but the guy refused to take money and told me to come back next week and get another.
Great suggestion... I would have never thought of a car wash. And what's even better...not having to worry about what was in the barrel before. Since this first one is going to be used to make my compost barrel set up (like the one Randy made for you)... I don't have to do a whole lot of rinsing it out!
    :-D

Thanks Carolyn. I was just getting so frustrated with that one place. They've been open forever... except for when I needed another barrel.
The decision was easy... Hmmm....two 30 gallon barrels for free... or spend more time trying to catch this place open and then shell out $20 for a 55 gallon barrel.
Heck... I might even take my truck through the carwash just to show my appreciation! :D

Cheryl, Today I went to the farm down the road and they had oodles of 55gal drums. I could have as many as I want. They come with....soap in them for washing down the milking parlor. and a 15 gal on for hoof treatment or something. So If there is a large dairy near you you might want to check them out for a few barrels.

Thanks Carolyn... but I don't think I've ever seen a dairy around here. The 30 gallon one is perfect for the compost and I'll be satisfied with another one that size for water collection. The price is right! But I will keep my eye out for some more 55 gallon ones.

Cheryl, no need to to something rash like washing your truck! After all, you were helping the car wash place out by removing something they would have had to get rid of on their own. I'm always suspicious of anyone with a clean truck :smt018 .
If there is a water treatment plant anywhere near you, they have chlorine that comes in 55 gal. barrels. That's where I got two of mine. They generally give them away (saves them haulage fees) but you might have to pay a little bit.

Where does your milk come from? There is a dairy farm every mile or two around here. Of course it helps that there is an abundance of water, which I can see where you might be challenged, but there is milk in Texas, right?

First off... I hate milk... unless it's chocolate. They had to practically force me to drink milk even as a baby.
In my little part of the world, dairies aren't common. Way back when, folks may have had a couple cows just for their families milk consumption. The cattle raised around here are for eating, breeding and/or selling.
So, to answer your question... my milk comes from the store. :-D
And when I'm home alone, I only buy a quart to have on hand for cooking.

    Edited to add:
Jane... water treatment plant? There's got to be some around Houston or Beaumont or even Baytown... but around here I think it's called a drainage ditch. :D

I've built a few rain barrels from 55 gallon plastic drums . I've bought them people who do power-washing, usually for about 10 to 20 dollars.. Soap comes in them. I find them a lot on Craigslist. That's a good place to start.
