What type of butterfly is this?

    This butterfly is so beautiful. I took this photo of it last year while I was in South Italy, but sort of forgot about it. Whilst reminiscing, I came across this photo again and was just wondering what type it is. It was quite large. (please note I have cropped the photo so everyone can have a better look at the butterfly, the full photo was beautiful)

    Actually the Zebra Butterfly is native to the eastern U.S. and parts of Canada only. While it, like the Monarch, could be branching out around the world it is more likely that what you photographed is the Scarce Swallowtail.... http://www.butterfly-guide.co.uk/specie ... andal6.htm

    It looks very similar to the Zebra but is native to most of Europe and parts of North African continent.
