From May 14th to June 24th, that's long enough to forget what rain is like. It was raining on the way to Mom's eye Dr. this afternoon, it stopped a few minutes later and became a sauna when the sun came back out...but that was about 10 miles north of my house.

My yard was still bone dry when I got home 2 hours later, we went to get something to eat and watched the dark clouds pass by. Got home and found that it my yard's turn to get rain, almost 1.5 inches of rain had fallen on MY garden. Woooooohooooo, we got rain and a goodly amount. Course I had spent two hours watering everything this morning but that was probably already dried up and just a memory for the plants by the time the rain started. And there was lightning so a good amount of nitrogen was released for the plants, they ought to be feeling mighty fine now.

I'm so happy for you and Fred Toni ;)
What is this about lightening and nitrogen?

Isn't it always the same? You wait for rain for weeks on end and the day you water the garden - it finally arrives. So glad you got enough to make a difference Toni. :-D

There is always nitrogen in the air but it is in a form that can not be used by plants.
The extreme heat of a lightning strike causes the nitrogen to combine with the oxygen in the air and forms nitrogen oxides. This creates 'fixed nitrogen' which combines with the rain and in the form of nitrates it can be used by plants.

Have you ever noticed that your plants seem to be a brighter green after a lightning and rain storm and how they seem to have a growth spurt after one too? The plant has received an extra shot of nitrogen that gives it a boost, so to speak.

Toni, we've had rain a lot. We got almost two inches on Wednesday and about 10 inches during the month of June. As we are at the botton of the hill our yard stays moist for quite awhile. Plus, Tammy waters her grass every day. Her water runs downhill, too. My rose bushes are looking great. dooley

Yeah, Dooley, every time there is rain in the state, I watch the weather radar online and see where almost all the time it is where you are.
We have had none since last week and none in the immediate forecast so we are back to high and dry here.

Wow, we have heavy rain this afternoon. My computer is on a power supply that is beeping at me because the electricity to the house is out.
I will be shutting down for a while, the power supply only gives me about 45 minutes.

It is raining big time here. We went out to the dump and it started coming down when we turned into the dump road. dr got soaked in just the time it took to throw two bags in the dumpster. It is going to rain off and on all week due to a tropical storm in the gulf. I'm glad our yard was mowed yesterday. We went to do some grocery shopping and when we got home discovered a good elf had been and mowed it all for us. He said he would use the weed eater along the fence when it's dry again. He'll probably have to mow the yard again by then. dooley

We have had the wettest June on record. Funny... I think they said the same thing last year...

Our electricity was off for almost 2 hours last evening. The house was getting very hot so when the rain eased up a bit we took off to get something to eat. It came back on while we were gone.

Our rain total for yesterday was 3.75 inches. Not a record amount of rain by any means for this June but at least we aren't ending it as the driest June on record.

It doesn't look like we will benefit from the tropical storm unless it makes a drastic change of course.
