We have three varieties in the ground now--a yellow keeper, red, and sweet white. We plant them at half the recommended distance, and take out every other one to use as green onions. When we harvest, usually in June, we hang them in the barn to dry. Between the drying garlic and onions, and the hens, we have a very aromatic barn!
The best onions I ever grew, I bought plants from a place in Texas. I must have done something right, and had perfect weather that year, most of them were the size of softballs. Or, for those unfamiliar with a softball, 10 to 12 inches, or 24 to to 30 centimeters. Didn't grow them for sale, but sell them I did. Folks are willing to pay a premium for onions that size.
FBG, was that Dixondale Farms you got onions from? They are famous for providing great onion sets, and carry a pretty wide variety of onions, too. They have a newsletter The Onion Patch (pretty catchy name, huh?) with tips on growing onions. www.dixondalefarms.com
I planted Egyptian Walking Onions in the fall. Looks like they are making a huge comeback. From what I've been told, I should never need to plant onions again..unless i want to...lol.
@marlingardener....nice setup and see the garlic all over the place. Aroma overload in there!!! I can smell everything just by your pics.
